Leaked photo shows possible prototype of Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact
Sony’s Xperia line seems to be falling out of the mainstream consciousness. After a string of financially unsuccessful releases (that led to the company discontinuing some mid-range lines) and an arguably aging aesthetic, Sony needs to pull out all the stops at MWC next week. A leaked photo of what might be a prototype of the rumored Xperia XZ2 Compact surfaced yesterday, and (based on the picture), it may be another difficult year for Sony.
An Xperia Blog commenter by the name of “Grisha” posted a photo of what he claims is a prototype of the Xperia XZ2 Compact sitting next to an Xperia Z5 Compact. Grisha went on to state that the XZ2 will follow the disappointing new trend of removing the 3.5 mm headphone jack and will move the fingerprint sensor from the side-mounted power button (like the one on the Xperia Z5) to the rear (like that of the Xperia XA2 line).
While this is only a prototype, Xperia Blog (who published the photo) said that their contacts have all but confirmed that the mysterious device will closely resemble the final product. If true, this represents a fairly substantial departure from the squared-off design that has defined the Xperia line for several years. The prototype XZ2 Compact features a thicker, rounded back and looks closer to an older generation iPhone than a modern smartphone.
Of course, this is complete speculation at this point and should be taken with a large grain of salt. The photos themselves have yet to be confirmed and could very well be an Xperia Z5 Compact sitting next to an obscure Chinese smartphone. We’ll know for certain should the XZ2 Compact debut at MWC next week.
