The trend toward smartphones with ever-larger batteries is far from over. A certification reveals that Oppo is planning a smartphone with a truly gigantic 12,000 mAh battery, which could provide several days of battery life.

The DRAM crisis is currently hitting mid-range smartphones hard – new models are often not only more expensive, but sometimes even come with several significant downgrades to offset the rising costs of RAM and flash storage. The Samsung Galaxy A27 5G ($282 on Amazon), for example, was more than 20% more expensive at launch than its direct predecessor, even though the device received multiple downgrades.

One option for making smartphones more attractive to customers during the DRAM crisis is larger batteries. These only increase costs marginally, yet still offer a tangible benefit in the form of longer battery life. Chinese smartphone manufacturers in particular are locked in a race to offer the smartphone with the largest battery. Oppo apparently plans to enter a new contender in this race soon, as the company has had a smartphone with the model number PNC110 certified by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

This certification reveals one detail in particular about this new smartphone: its battery capacity. According to the listing, Oppo is installing a battery with a rated capacity of 11,640 mAh, which will likely be marketed with a typical capacity of 12,000 mAh. This would make the battery 20 percent larger than that of the Oppo A7 Pro Max, and even 50 percent larger than that of the Chinese version of the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max. Apart from the fact that this new model offers a 5G modem and dual-SIM support, no details about the launch date, price or specifications are known yet.
