Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 has climbed into the top 10 frontier text rankings, rivaling Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini. It's also shot to the top of the frontend coding leaderboard, becoming the first Chinese model to hold that spot.

Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 reached first place on Arena.ai's Frontend Code leaderboard on July 16, scoring 1,679 points, ahead of Claude Fable 5 (1,631) and GPT-5.6 Sol (1,618).

While the new ranking is still largely populated by Anthropic's Claude models, Kimi K3’s predecessor had ranked 18th on the same leaderboard, so the new model represents a mighty position improvement in just a single generation.

Kimi K3 is a 2.8-trillion-parameter MoE with a million-token context window and a new hybrid linear-attention mechanism called Kimi Delta Attention, designed predominantly for efficiency, which is typical for open-source models by Chinese firms that don't have access to all the GPU power that their Western counterparts do. Moonshot has said the model's weights are expected to be released under a modified MIT license by July 27, which would make local deployment possible in addition to API access.

Kimi K3 vs Claude vs ChatGPT pricing

The new K3 AI model costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens through Moonshot's API, with a discounted $0.30 rate for cached input tokens during long chat thread sessions. Compared with its own predecessor, K3's rates are roughly three to four times higher, and it also costs more than other Chinese open-weight models such as DeepSeek V4 Pro and GLM 5.2.

This actually places it at the same price point as Claude Sonnet 5, whose standard rate is also $3/$15, though Anthropic currently offers introductory pricing of $2/$10 through the end of August. Kimi K3, however, undercuts OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol tier ($5/$30) as well as Claude Opus 4.8 ($5/$25), while OpenAI's mid- and lower GPT-5.6 tiers, Terra and Luna, are priced at $2.50/$15 and $1/$6, respectively.

This premium pricing suggests that Moonshot is confident Kimi K3 can compete with established Western frontier models while matching or exceeding some of them on this particular benchmark. Moreover, the Arena.ai ranking reflects human preference when executing a coding subset, so it is just one reference point to keep an eye on as other benchmarks and independent evaluations of the Kimi K3 model sensation start trickling down and it is subjected to more scrutiny.
