Jaguar's I-Pace launched back in 2018 as an electrified luxury SUV with modest performance aspirations. In a recent interview with Autocar, Jaguar Land Rover's CEO, Adrian Mardell, has confirmed that the brand will not continue production of the I-Pace alongside its updated electric platform, which is set to launch in 2025.
The CEO adds that a final end date for the I-Pace, Jaguar's only current all-electric vehicle, has not yet been determined, but the company does not want it to be off the market for too long before it's replaced.
We don’t want the product to be out of the market for too long, particularly the electrified one [I-Pace]. Now we’re waiting for the confidence in JEA. Right now, people are telling me it’s going to be in the first half of 2025. That’s just under two years away. I’d be more confident in that response when we’re nine to 12 months away. So we’ve got time – we’ve got nine to 12 months – to work through these decisions.
Back in 2021, it was reported that, by 2025, Jaguar would have discontinued all of its internal combustion vehicles, pivoting entirely to electric power. As part of Jaguar's plan for a 2025 all-electric relaunch, it has confirmed three new EVs, including a luxury four-door electric GT car with 430 miles of range.
The CEO added that the new EV platform will likely end up producing vehicles with long wheelbases, which will lend the cars a sense of stability and presence on the road. Realistically, a long wheelbase may make them less agile, too, but how this plays out remains to be seen.
A shift to a new EV architecture will absolutely be necessary if Jaguar wants to make it as an EV-only company. The I-Pace received positive reviews, but ultimately falls short in a number of ways when compared to its modern EV counterparts.
