PCWatch reported that the first mainstream desktop 8-core Coffee Lake-S CPUs should be launched in September along with the Z390 platform. These chips should cost more than US$400 and will come in 80/95 W SKUs. Intel will also launch refreshed 22-core Skylake-X HEDT processors and ultra-premium Cascade Lake-X chips by the end of the year.

Even though there was some controversy involved in Intel’s 28-core CPU presentation at Computex, the company is well on-track to release 22-core HEDT Skylake-X and mainstream 8-core Coffee Lake-S refreshes later this year. The 28-core presented at Computex might not see any commercial release, but Intel promised there will be versions of that chip launching with the Cascade Lake-X family by the end of this year.

The Skylake-X family will still be around for a few years, as Intel feels like it could be losing some shares on the server market because of AMD’s EPYC. This way, Intel will target mainstream desktop users with the Coffee Lake-S family and successors, HEDT users with the Skylake-X family, and ultra-premium desktop users (something in-between server-grade and HEDT) with the Cascade Lake-X models.

PCWatch confirmed that the first 8-core Coffee Lake-S mainstream CPUs are expected to be launched this September. These models will duke it out with AMD’s Zen+ Ryzen 7 2700X and the like, and motherboard makers should release updated Z390-based models for improved PCIe speeds and I/O connections.

Prices for the first 8-core CPUs are expected to initially be over the US$400 mark, and TDPs should be between 80-95 W. Meanwhile, the first 8-core server-grade mainstream CPUs are supposed to make an appearance in July.
