Instagram is going after AI influencers that don't admit they're fake

Instagram's fix for AI accounts pretending to be real people: hide the account until it fesses up. Whether that results in compliance, however, is another story, as AI models keep getting smarter.

Instagram is renaming its “AI creator" label to "AI-generated profile," and will start limiting how far unlabeled AI personas can spread if the accounts behind them don't disclose that the person featured isn't real.

The original label, introduced back in May, was opt-in and somewhat vague, applying to any account that regularly used AI tools regardless of whether a real person was behind it. The new label is specifically meant to flag profiles where the featured person is entirely AI-generated rather than simply AI-assisted, closing a gap that let fully synthetic influencer accounts blend in with real creators who just used AI as part of their workflow.

Limited reach for those who don't play by the rules

Under the new system, accounts Instagram identifies as unlabeled AI-generated personas will have their reach limited, meaning non-followers won't see their posts surfaced in Explore, Reels, or other recommendation surfaces. Creators can restore that reach in one of two ways: proactively applying the AI-generated profile label themselves, or appealing the restriction if they believe Instagram's detection got it wrong, something the company itself admits its systems won't always get right.

The new label operates separately from Meta's existing "AI info" system, which flags individual posts across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads when technical markers, like C2PA metadata or Google's SynthID watermark, indicate AI involvement, or when a creator discloses it themselves. The profile-level label is specifically about whether the person shown across an account's posts, comments, and messages is real or AI-generated.

Catering to frustruated users

Instagram framed the change around a simple frustration, saying users don't like discovering after the fact that a profile that seemed human was AI-generated the whole time. So far, the policy only targets accounts impersonating a specific fake person, not the much larger volume of accounts that post AI-generated content without pretending to be a human influencer.

Fully AI-generated personas have become common as unofficial brand influencers, with companies increasingly using synthetic characters to promote products instead of paying real people, and no specific rules currently require advertisers to disclose when that's the case (via The Guardian). Whether the new label meaningfully changes that practice will depend on how consistently Instagram's detection systems catch accounts that have every incentive to avoid the label altogether.
