Huawei’s smartphone lineup might be rather dry this year but make no mistake, it is making up for this in its laptop division. Its latest offering is none other than the Huawei Matebook X Pro (2022). In terms of its design, one striking difference with the previous models of the Huawei MateBook X Pro is the new and improved display. With its maximum brightness upgraded to 500 nits (up from 450 in the previous model), the screen in this device is rather bright and almost bezel-less, with a 3:2 aspect ratio which provides more vertical space for productivity and scrolling on the web. It simply means that this 14.2-inch screen uses a somewhat esoteric 3.1K resolution which looks sharp whether for playing videos or just doing work. According to Huawei, it is the best display ever used in one of its laptops. In addition, it is also a touchscreen, allowing for quick click, scroll, and zoom with the fingertips.
Apart from the touchscreen feature, the touchpad on this model is also genuinely excellent. Well, it can be likened to an infinity pool, which is an apt comparison since the edge closest to the user reaches all the way to the edge of the chassis with no bottom border, which makes downwards swipes feel much smoother. The touchpad is of decent size and has a good, firm click, but what is even more interesting are the expanded gesture controls. Furthermore, the edges of the pad can be swiped up and down to adjust the volume and brightness, while the top edge can be used to control video and music playback.
As far as its keyboard is concerned, it is not much different from the previous model, with subtle but even backlighting and a decent amount of travel. While it may feel comfortable to be used, not quite revolutionary though. No doubt that it is definitely a great keyboard but it feels like Huawei is playing it safe. This is due to the fact that, while other laptop big dogs are pushing the envelope with weird, cool stuff like folding displays and touchpad-integrated screens, Huawei seems content to make products that perform well but do not really innovate. This is also true for the touchpad as the gesture controls are nice, but do not exactly scream ‘cutting edge tech’.
In terms of its performance, this model has been equipped with the 12th-gen Alder Lake Intel with either an i5 or i7 processor, depending on the performance needs of the user. Well, Intel’s new core architecture simply means a better performance in both single- and multi-core workloads, with reduced power draw which helps to stretch the device’s battery life a little further. In a nutshell, it is a great device to be explored further, depending on the need and preference of the user.

The MateBook X Pro is another excellent high-end laptop from Huawei, albeit essentially unchanged from the late 2022 model other than a bump up to the latest Intel chip. That brings with it a modest performance improvement, but no real gains to battery life, which remains the hardware’s main weak point. If you can live with keeping your charger close at hand and don’t mind paying a premium for plenty of storage then this is as premium as lightweight laptops get, a slick device that looks as good as anything out there and packs the performance to match.

Although the premium configuration is pricey, the MateBook X Pro looks like a steal compared to the eye-watering price tag on the specced-out Surface Laptop Studio 2, offering comparable performance and a better display for our money. When pitted against the holy grail M3 Macbook Pro, a 16GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD MacBook comes in at the same price as the MateBook X Pro, and although the MacBook remains our top choice, the fact you can double your RAM and storage for the same price (if you are willing to sacrifice a bit on the performance and battery life) makes Huawei's offering look a lot more competitive.

Intel Meteor Lake-H:
Ultra 9 185H: The top-of-the-line Meteor Lake chip that debuted in December 2023. This 1st Gen Core Ultra processor has come to replace 13th generation Core chips; it has 16 cores (6 + 8 + 2) and 22 threads at its disposal. Its Performance cores, of which there are 6, run at up to 5.1 GHz while its Efficient cores, of which there are 10 (8 main cores plus 2 extra ones found in the Low Power Island) run at up to 3.8 GHz. The 8-core Arc GPU, just out of the oven, serves as the integrated graphics adapter - this runs at up to 2.35 GHz - and there is a bevy of other brand-new technologies on offer as well such as the integrated AI Boost NPU with two Gen 3 engines for hardware AI workload acceleration. vPro Enterprise and business-centric features such as the Remote Platform Erase are onboard as well. This laptop processors's "base" power consumption is 45 W, while its Turbo power consumption is not supposed to go over 115 W.
