Huawei Mate 10 Pro
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has a lot going for it. In addition to a slick, premium design, the screen packs vibrant, OLED technology with an 18:9 aspect ratio - similar to that found on the Google Pixel 2 XL and iPhone X. Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro also has a dual camera setup that is a bit different. There are two camera modules around the back of the Mate 10 Pro, one with a 12 MP color (RGB) sensor and optical image stabilization (OIS), the other with a 20 MP black and white (monochrome) sensor and no OIS. The f/1.6 aperture lenses across both cameras give the Mate 10 series the accolade of widest combined apertures across all dual camera smartphones, thereby suggesting low-light performance is where it should shine. When its specs are laid out alongside the rest of the flagship competition, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro wins out in some key areas. For starters, it offers more storage at 128 GB as the standard vs 64 GB on other flagships. It also has a beefier battery than the competition. It features a huge 4,000 mAh battery, compared with 3,300 mAh in the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and under 2,691 mAh in the iPhone 8 Plus. Screen on-time is excellent here. Even with occasional gaming, film watching, hotspot and GPS usage, the phone lasts a very comfortable day. The Mate 10 Pro even has an IR blaster for some added nostalgia-factor, meaning it can double up as a TV remote control for those times users try to spook their mates in the pub, or simply can not find their own. The Mate 10 Pro comes with Android 8, the latest version of Google’s operating system, meaning users get the operating system’s latest security features and UI highlights, such as picture-in-picture viewing and notification badges. It also has no headphone jack, or microSD card slot, so a user will need to use a dongle for their wired headphones but the ample internal storage should be enough to last the life-cycle of this phone. And even though it has a glass back, it does not support wireless charging. Nevertheless, the curved Gorilla Glass back panel combines with a metal frame to create a phone that looks sleek, feels rich and does not disappoint alongside other phones in the same price-bracket. The overall design of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is minimal and beautiful. It is available in four colors, Mocha Brown, Midnight Blue and Titanium Gray. The front of the phone is seriously screen-heavy, offering a 6-inch display experience while maintaining a smaller footprint than the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus. Its 80.9% screen-to-bezel ratio impresses compared to the classical iPhone 8 and 8 Plus design. However, the screen is not the sharpest at 1,080 x 2,160 pixels, putting it below the crystal clear 2K and even 4K displays on competing smartphones like the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. OLED technology with some added HDR10 support combines to give the Mate 10 Pro’s display ample punch and pop. While the Mate 10 is just a prettier version of the P10 Plus, the Mate 10 Pro is a whole new device. Even its design is different from the Mate 10. It a serious device from Huawei aiming to compete with the Samsung Note 8 and LG V30. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Wow, but with minor pitfalls. With the Pro version of the Mate 10 series, we currently have the strongest Huawei smartphone in our test. The storage equipment and camera have been improved, and the Chinese phone now has an OLED screen in the 2:1 format. Together with the Kirin 970, a SoC that has an additional NPU is used. Sounds great, but Huawei has made cuts in some places.
Update: Software update adds GPU Turbo.

The Mate 10 Pro was a defining handset for Huawei when it launched in 2017. Every bit as capable as its Samsung, LG and Apple competition, it marked the moment Huawei made it to the big time. And that's still the case, following a series of updates.

Its successor will arrive before the end of 2018, but the fact the Mate 10 Pro's price has dropped so significantly means it is a real bargain and a better deal than almost every mid-range phone out there.

A true flagship in every sense of the word, we really love what Huawei does in the Mate 10 Pro. A few quibbles aside, it's probably one of the best devices we've ever tested. The hardware is on par with anything we've used, but the software left us feeling a little bitter.

I have seen the Mate 10 Pro hover around the $700(or less) mark on Amazon lately as well if that helps. It’s a powerhouse of a smartphone and has most of the bells and whistles you need minus a couple of omissions. I think the $650-700 range is the sweet spot for the Mate 10 Pro.

At $650 the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is more affordable than flagships like the Galaxy Note 8 and S9+ while coming close in some aspects of performance. Unfortunately, the pricing is awkward for the US unlocked market, wedged between more affordable midrange phones like the Motorola Moto X4 and G5 Plus, which can work with any US carrier, and Huawei's own Honor View 10, which has the same Kirin 970 processor and AI features for a lower price. There's also the rumored OnePlus 6 to consider, which could cost around the same as the Mate 10 Pro while offering the very latest hardware.

Some of the Mate 10 Pro’s “headline” features still feel like gimmicks: the NPU is under-utilized, and frankly the phone would be better were EMUI left off altogether. However the core of it is admirably solid: the Kirin 970’s performance, the excellent cameras, and the long-lasting battery. More capable Android users will probably want to oust Huawei’s software tweaks for a different launcher, but everybody should be able to appreciate the combination of affordability, speed, and some great photography.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has had a rough go since its launch. Initially, it was supposed to launch on AT&T which would have given Huawei its first shot at a carrier branded device. That deal fell through thanks to political fallout. Because of the AT&T issue, other retailers decided to step back and evaluate their own relationship with Huawei, prompting Best Buy to pull out of carrying their devices.

Quirks aside, overall the Mate 10 Pro is very good all-around Android phone, and an excellent one for photography. It's also a tough sell at $799.99 without a major wireless carrier to break up the cost into a monthly payment plan. Regardless of everything else, that will probably be the deciding factor for most people.

While Huawei is offering a very intriguing hardware and camera experience with this device, the software is going to keep me far away. No phone with specs such as this should behave the way it has, and with such a heavy skin on top of Oreo, easily one of the best versions of Android yet, it feels like I’m missing out on something special with it being all covered and skinned to death. I’ve always been one to appreciate minor software tweaks here and there, but sometimes, EMUI 8.0 doesn’t even feel like Android, and when you’re a purist like me, it makes things frustrating.

From the time we've been living with our mocha brown Huawei Mate 10 Pro, it's clear that Huawei has finally cracked this category. It's a flagship that the general public can seriously consider buying above and beyond its similar-priced competition. If only a carrier would provide it on plan in the US, eh?

But it’s hard for me to see anyone taking advantage of that choice even if they had it and opted to spend $800 for the Mate 10 Pro instead of a phone from Google, Samsung, or even Apple. If Huawei really wants to play in the US, it not only has to work with carriers and make the US government happy, but it also has to make and sell a phone that people will want to buy here — and frankly, the Mate 10 Pro isn’t it.

Having said that, it’s rather unfortunate that Huawei is making consumers choose one feature over another. Instead of coming up with multiple variants, Huawei should’ve concentrated their efforts to craft the perfect smartphone – one that would overthrow the competition in one fell swoop, and one that embodies all the great features of both the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.

Being a bit more expensive than the Mate 10, the Pro variant offers a few additions and discards a few too. It still sports an amazing chipset, an amazing camera, and a modified EMUI 8.0. I’d only recommend the Mate 10 Pro over the base model if you prefer a better display in exchange for the lack of a dedicated audio jack. Still, with these changes, the Mate 10 Pro is still on our Top 5.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t buy the Mate 10 Pro. If you don’t mind the display deficiencies, it’s one of the best handsets of the year, with tremendous battery life, incredible speed, and good looks. I just wish the delineation between the models were a little more straightforward. I personally don’t like home buttons, but $100 is a lot to pay to get rid of it. And the technical knowledge that you’re buying a lower-res screen is probably a non-starter for some people.

Slapping a pro moniker on a phone generally implies that it’s the best version of that particular model, but that’s not exactly the case with the Mate 10 Pro. Compared to the cheaper Mate 10, it has a lower-resolution screen, no headphone jack, and no expandable storage. The only real benefits come in the form of a sleeker design and OLED screen.

I really dislike ending the review of a phone with negatives, especially a phone this good but this is why so many of you love (or tolerate) Ausdroid: we give our honest opinions and tell it how we see it. Manufacturers appreciate it mostly but we are not beholden to anyone and will always stay true to that.

Huawei’s solution, while not perfect, is the best we have seen so far. It is easy to use, allows a lot of extra functionality while maintaining full use of the phone and allows all apps to be used on the desktop. I am not sure how often I would use this functionality but there are definitely times I have wanted this functionality while away from home. Now you can have it on the Huawei Mate 10.

The Mate 10 Pro is Huawei's best phone yet, with a beautiful metal and glass design, a stunning OLED display, an IP67 build and great battery life. Is it the best Android smartphone out there? No, probably not. For now, that distinction still goes to the Samsung Galaxy Note8, but the gap between Samsung and Huawei has never been closer.

There's much to love about the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. It has a clean design, high powered processor and one of the best smartphone cameras on the market at the moment. All of that doesn't come cheap though, with the 64 GB model costing a recommended R17 999.

Now it is time to round up this review. I think it is safe to say that what we have here is one of the best Android phones on the market. That statement does come with some provisos though. Huawei do need to fix the two major bugs that I have encountered and then this phone would be near perfect. They also need to do a bit more work on the EMUI Desktop interface as it is not quite up there with the offerings of Samsung in the form of DEX. I think it is fair to compare this against the likes of the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 in terms of the performance and usability, and if you are looking for a phone that is a tad cheaper than the Note 8 then this is a very good option. If however you feel that that the S-Pen is something that would be beneficial to you then it would be worth checking the Note 8 out. For me though, I don’t need the S-Pen and I love the dual camera setup on this phone so that is where my money would be going.

Ultimately, we can say that Huawei has done enough to sell the Mate 10 as a strong competitor in the space, but we wouldn't necessarily go as far as to say that it has enough distinction to overpower the majority of the bunch out there. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro really shows just how much the company has grown over the years, and it is one heck of a smartphone. Yes, the phone lacks support for expandable storage, it has no headphone jack, and its 1080p display isn’t “cutting edge” in comparison to other flagship smartphones, but the Mate 10 Pro as a whole is an excellent premium-tier phone with commendable camera performance and battery life.

Huawei's flagship Mate 10 Pro is bursting with features. A great screen, very good battery life and widespread use of AI make it a pleasure to use, while IP67 protection is welcome. It's not without drawbacks though. Internal storage capacity of 128GB sounds like plenty, but I'd still appreciate a MicroSD slot. The slippery glass backplate reduces confidence in one-handed operation, and the lack of a dedicated headset jack will irritate some, even though Huawei provides a USB-C headset and an adapter.

With its RGB/monochrome dual-camera concept, Huawei is following a different concept than most other manufacturers, but the Mate 10 Pro’s class-leading still image results show that the Chinese manufacturer is on the right path, and that good zoom and bokeh results can be achieved without a longer focal length on the secondary camera. The Mate 10 Pro is no slouch in video mode, either. It’s not quite on the same outstanding level as for stills, but is nonetheless capable of delivering a very solid video performance all around.

Huawei has been pretty aggressive with its pricing in recent times, and it’ll be very, very interesting to see how much the company will price the Mate 10 Pro at. So far, we’re only told that it will be even more affordable than its predecessor, which was priced at RM3,399 at launch. While the Mate 10 is quite a boring upgrade, the Mate 10 Pro offers everything we expect from a top-end phablet. Some will be upset to lose the headphone jack and microSD slot, but the new design and gorgeous display may make up it.

Huawei is sticking with a similar dual camera setup to those we've seen on its P10 already. A 12-megapixel sensor shoots in color, while a 20-megapixel sensor shoots exclusively in black and white. Shots from both sensors looked great on the P10 and with the Mate 10's wider aperture (now f/1.6 on both lenses, which lets in more light) and handful of software tweaks, I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do.

Finally, the move to all-glass designs made us hopeful that we'll get wireless charging, but we were in no luck. At least that's much easier to forgive as we get the blazing fast Huawei Super Charge.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is a defining handset; a flagship every bit as capable as its Apple, Google and Samsung competition. Which is a serious accomplishment for a company that has been yo-yoing between on-the-money and on-the-lam over the last couple of years.

People don’t buy phones based on potential, though. It’ll be battery life, camera image quality and price that will decide if the Mate 10 can outmuscle the Galaxy S8, LG V30, Pixel 2 XL and the rest. If you’re a fan of shiny glass, Huawei has an edge already.

The Mate 10 Pro is clearly slimmer and thinner than the Mate 10, but the slightly smaller 5.9-inch display on the Mate 10 does offer a higher 2K pixel resolution. While the Mate 10 Pro does get rid of the 3.5mm audio jack and microSD port, it does offer IP67 dust and water resistance to make up for it. The Mate 10 Porsche Design on the other hand is more or less the Mate 10 Pro but with much nicer and more premium materials with Porsche Design content. No Malaysia release dates yet but stay tuned to TechNave.com for more Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro news.

On a final thought, last week at GTC Europe, NVIDIA's keynote mentioned an understated yet interesting feature where using AI could help improve it. Ray tracing, to provide realistic scene interpretation over polygon modeling, is usually a very computationally intensive task, however the benefit is an extreme payoff in visual fidelity. What NVIDIA showed was AI assisted ray-tracing: predicting the colors of nearby pixels based on the information already computed and then updating as more computation was performed. While true ray-tracing for interactive video (and video games) might still be a far-away wish, AI-assisted ray tracing looked like an obvious way to accelerate the problem. Could this be something applied to smartphones? If there is dedicated AI hardware, such as the NPU, it could be a good fit to enable better user experiences.

Having used the Huawei Mate 10 for a short while, I can comfortably see this being Huawei’s best phone to date. Whether it can push itself into the thoughts of consumers when the iPhone X, Google Pixel 2 XL and Samsung Galaxy S8 exist is another story.

Huawei Mate 10
The Huawei Mate 10 smartphone was launched in October 2017. Huawei has delivered its latest salvo in the battle against other mainstream manufacturers and the results are very compelling. The first impression is important and the Huawei Mate 10 knows it. It is a fine looking handset, no two ways about it. A massive screen with near-zero bezels, a smart glass design, and some attractive paint jobs all contribute to making the Mate 10 so appealing. After generations of metal-clad Mates, Huawei changed its mind and opted for glass instead. The Mate 10 now comes in a dual-glass body, held together by a brushed metal frame. The screen bezels have all but disappeared and the fingerprint scanner has been moved over to the front, doing double-duty as a Home or a multi-function key, depending on your preferences. The screen sits behind a Gorilla Glass ending on a subtle curve. The rear Gorilla Glass got all the premium treatment. It has a 4-axis curve meaning all sides are curved towards the frame. The effect is stunning to look at and quite practical too. The Huawei Mate 10 brings a long overdue update and the 5.9-inch IPS LCD screen now boasts 1440p resolution and 499 PPI. There is also HDR10 support, but no Dolby Vision. The Huawei Mate 10's screen uses a PenTile RGBW matrix with an extra white subpixel. This allows the screen to reach higher brightness levels while using less power than the traditional QuadHD LCD panels. The screen of the Mate 10 has two modes, Normal and Vivid. Some units have the Normal option chosen by default, while others come with the Vivid mode pre-selected. Those two settings offer different levels of brightness and color accuracy. The Kirin 970 chip premiered at IFA a couple of months ago, but this is the first implementation seen. It is manufactured using a high-end 10 nm process by Huawei's in-house HiSilicon division and promises faster performance and great battery-efficiency. The highlight of the new Kirin 970 is not the 25 % faster CPU or the 4x more powerful GPU, but the brand-new Neural-network processor unit (NPU), which provides hardware acceleration to machine learning tasks. These tasks include image recognition, voice recognition, and natural language processing. Huawei has already trained the chip by showing it millions of images, voice samples, and text, so now it is able to recognize new images, voice and data much faster. The Huawei Mate 10 has a new dual-camera by Huawei and Leica. The setup is an enhanced version of the second generation of the Mate 9. The image sensors are identical, but the apertures are wider. To put this in numbers, the Mate 10 features a 12 MP color and a 20 MP monochrome imager sitting behind f/1.6 lenses each. The camera relies on the same 4-way focusing technologies as before. A user gets laser AF, depth detection, contrast-detect AF, and phase detect AF. While the Mate 10 boasts some good specs, it is still hard to see why one should pay more for it. For its price, the P10 Plus does quite good. However, there are other smartphones at around the same price with better specs such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and OnePlus 5. One of the last ones of its kind. With their XXL-sized smartphone Mate 10, the Chinese manufacturer Huawei bucks the current trend towards displays with a 2:1-aspect ratio. How does the high-end phablet fare and is an import worth it?

All up, a highly capable and competent flagship, and at only $899 outright in a world of $1,000-plus smartphones, a financially attractive one as well.

Honestly, not a whole lot. The Mate 10 is as much of a flagship as any of its competitors out there and in places where it lacks, the phone makes up for in others. Makes you wonder why anyone would pay more for a flagship.

Huawei has traditionally used its Mate series phones as the flagships of the range, and 2017 is no exception, with not one, but two devices: the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro. The Mate 10 – the subject of this review – continues the design language of last years P10/P10 Plus, with rounded edges and a piano black finish, in contrast to the Mate 9‘s beveled edges and brushed metal facade.

The Mate 10 is currently available for around $680 through Amazon, which places it a few hundred dollars below competitors like the Pixel 2 XL, LG V30, and Samsung Galaxy Note 8. I feel this is a fair price considering the difference in quality; phones like the Pixel 2 XL and Galaxy Note 8 in particular are better, but they’re also more expensive.

Apart from the heaty 4K video recording we have next to no issues with any feature on the Mate 10, just that the AI driven NPU features could stand to have a bit more polish, especially the Easy Projection, so we're hoping Huawei continue to polish these features. As it is, there is no other phone on the market with these features asides from the Mate 10 Pro or Mate 10 Porsche Design. Currently priced at RM2399 (yeah, yeah, the RRP or Recommended Retail price is RM2699) the closest contender would be the OnePlus 5T but it not only lacks many features that the Mate 10 has but is also an 18:9 aspect ratio display device so if you're in the market for such a device, then the Huawei Mate 10 should definitely be at the top of your consideration list.

With prices of top-tier flagships from rival companies ballooning past 40K, it’s refreshing to see Huawei’s newest and greatest priced below that. With an SRP of just Php 32,990, the Huawei Mate 10 is a great alternative to the offers of its competitors without compromising build quality, performance, image quality and battery life.

The Mate 10 doesn’t have wireless charging, which is unlikely to be a deal breaker for most readers. On the plus side the long battery life means less emphasis on charging anyway. It also charges quickly, the battery goes to half a full charge in a little under 30 minutes.

We’ve already given you our take on Huawei’s top-tier flagship, the Mate 10 Pro a few weeks ago. We’ve been thoroughly impressed with what the manufacturer has been able to achieve with their current flagship, so much so that we’re wholeheartedly recommending it to anyone looking to buy a high-end phablet that’s not made by a Korean company. But before we forget, the Mate 10 Pro has a more affordable brother that eschews fancy aspect ratios for something more traditional. With a Php 32,990 price point and much of the same hardware that made the Mate 10 Pro great, the regular Mate 10 is on the road to become one of the most prolific flagships of the year.

The Huawei Mate 10 is a the most mainstream smartphone the company has ever produced. It retains its slick looks while switching to the current trend of a glass front and back. It retains its massive battery while adding an even more efficient chipset and AI optimizations. It takes what used to be a full-featured but complicated camera and makes it incredibly reliable for pick-up-and-shoot photographers.

To top it off, Huawei is pricing the Mate 10 at the very same price point as its predecessor at RM2,699; that’s pretty good price-to-performance ratio. Of course, it’s not as sleek-looking nor does it carry an IP67 rating like the Mate 10 Pro, but if you value the Mate 10’s feature set (microSD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, among others), it’s really quite a compelling flagship smartphone.
