Something that costs less than £200 will always come with tempered expectations. For its purpose - light computing tasks and the consumption of streaming media - you get something capable and easy to use, though it can’t be pushed too far by 3D games. The Honor Pad X8 makes a very good general-purpose, go-anywhere tablet, with a long battery life if you’re taking it on the road. Its main selling points are its slim and sleek appearance and low price. A 10in screen is fine for reading articles or books, and the IPS panel in the Pad X8 is decent for watching movies if you’ve got no alternative. There's not a lot of onboard storage though, unless you add a large Micro SD card, so you’ll need an internet connection to stream from.

So... that's pretty much it. Overall, the HONOR Pad X8 is a rather basic tablet for the entry-level market. Since it's meant for that purpose, I find the tablet just fine if that's what you're looking for especially if you need it to last longer and have its own 4G LTE connection. While the 10.1-inch display is full HD (something you don't see often in entry-level tablets) the fact that it's an LCD with low brightness does not take advantage of this. However, if you own an HONOR smartphone, you could take advantage of the ecosystem and use HONOR Share to transfer files seamlessly. The price tag of RM899 seems reasonable although some people would argue that you might as well get a budget smartphone since it's more compact. For other contenders, it kind of falls flat to the Redmi Pad which features much better tech specs (90Hz 10.6-inch display, Helio G99 chipset, and 8000mAh battery with 18W fast charging) for the same price. On the other hand, the Nokia T20 also has a much bigger battery at 8200mAh with 15W fast charging but is priced at RM1099. However, only the X8 and T20 have 4G LTE connectivity built in. Either way, if you need such a tablet, you are welcome to get this one.

This is an Android Tablet from HONOR. On initial setup it offers to transfer Apps from your phone so that the transition allows most of your Apps to work seamlessly and without having to do an additional download.

The Pad X9 is missing a microSD slot, which you'd find on several of its competitors. The average battery life and lack of cellular connectivity are easier to swallow on a device that's probably too big to leave the house often, while the chipset's lack of serious oomph doesn't hinder the tablet's use for less demanding applications. At the time of writing this review, we are seeing some very competitive pricing for the Honor Pad X9. It seems to be going for just under €200 in Europe. The UK pricing is GBP 180 and even as low as GBP 150 on some listings. We also saw a Saudi Arabia listing for SAR 626. These are some very competitive numbers. Still, it might be worth looking at some alternatives as well, like the Xiaomi Redmi Pad, the OnePlus Pad Go or the Realme Pad 2 all of which have larger batteries and expandable storage.

If you are looking for a capable Android slate that won't break the bank, then the Honor Pad X9 is a worthy contender for your money. It performs exceptionally well for a device that costs under £175/$200. The large screen is great for viewing media, and the portable nature of a tablet means the X9 offers a great degree of convenience when traveling. The X9 was my wingman during my recent trip to IFA in Berlin, standing in for my laptop as I walked the show floor of the Berlin Messe. The fact I only needed to carry this and not my laptop was a godsend. With everything I needed at my fingertips, the Honor X9 proved to be a brilliant tablet for multiple use cases, and you can't complain about that. The Honor Pad X9 is the latest in the brands line of budget slates.

Overall, the Honor Pad X9 has a little bit of everything, which can be good if you're a student or professional looking for a flexible device. If you're looking for a tablet with a decent screen size, good performance, and a keyboard to do some work, then you can't go wrong with this one. At RM1099, it's also a good deal since you get the keyboard for free. The only thing it's not great at is gaming, plus there are some stylus that might not work on it.

Okay then, so why did this tablet surprise me? Well, there is one thing lacking in today’s tech market – and that is the selection of budget tablets. Yeah, we really don’t have that many choices from reputable brands. We have the Galaxy Tab A8 which was not updated for a long time, whereby the newly released Xiaomi Pad 6 that we reviewed earlier – many of you voiced out disappointment for not having a SIM card slot. There is also the OPPO Pad Air that’s an actually decent tablet but is also missing a SIM card slot. And that’s why I say the HONOR Pad X9 is surprising. It targets a specific segment of users with pinpoint laser-focused accuracy and they do it really well. Good screen, good speakers, has 4G connectivity, and the price is really enticing. Good job there HONOR.

At its average asking price, the Honor Pad X9 looks great, feels great, and performs a little better than expected in its price bracket. It’s a solid general-use tablet with a fast screen that’s suitable for most applications, but its pushy first-party apps could scare off inexperienced tablet users.

My time with the Pad X9 was brief and limited, but it's always nice to see a new addition to the affordable tablet market - and this one is an intriguing one to say the least. Just like with its phones, Honor has managed to stuff in some serious features, specs and functionality that leave us very excited indeed to try it out properly. We'll be sure to bring you our full review as soon as we have. Like what you've seen already? It'll be available directly from Honor's website from 10th July, with Amazon and other only retailers to follow from July 19th.

If you’re after the biggest screen going for under £200, the Honor Pad X9 looks hard to beat. It might not be the most potent tablet around, but it’s packing plenty of on-board storage, and the expansive display is bright, colourful and plenty sharp enough to do justice to Full HD video. Unlike the smaller, more affordable Fire HD alternatives, you aren’t tied in to Amazon’s take on Android, and there’s nothing with a Samsung or Apple badge on it that can compete on size for similar cash. The ageing Lenovo Tab P11 looks like the strongest competition; we’ll have to wait until we get one in for a full review to see whether the Honor can come out victorious.

While the tablet segment is fairly crowded now, there are only a handful of compelling options in the affordable category. Among the closest competitors for the Honor Pad X8a, the Redmi Pad SE (review) comes across as especially strong, considering that the two are priced similarly and are evenly matched in terms of the core specs too. The aspect where the Honor Pad X8a stands out is the software platform, which is more feature-rich and attuned better for large-screen usage. I think the fact that Honor bundles a decent cover along with its tablet works in its favour too However, the Redmi slate does have an 8GB RAM variant (priced higher at Rs 14,999), that could appeal to those looking to use their slate for running basic games etc. All said and done, for its asking price of Rs 12,999, the Honor Pad X8a is a worthy device that works well for those looking for an affordable tablet for multimedia usage.

Overall, we were satisfied with the Honor Pad X8a and can recommend it to students who want to use the tablet to read slides, do their school assignments or participate in video calls. And when you want to relax, you can enjoy movies with the large screen and experience clear audio from its four speakers. The performance leaves much to be desired, but that's expected for a tablet sold at this price. Our other complaint is the slow charging, which may or may not bother you, depending on how extensively you plan to use the tablet. If you want alternatives, here are a few entry-level options we recommend. One is the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 (RM699), a lighter 2023 tablet with Samsung's One UI. It's a smaller tablet with a less impressive screen but better performance at a lower price. The second would be the realme Pad 2 (RM899), which has performance comparable to the Galaxy Tab A9 but with a larger 1.5K screen that has a 120Hz refresh rate.

It comes with a vibrant 90Hz display, impressive battery life, and a premium-feeling build. The addition of expandable storage up to 1TB is a notable plus for users needing more space. While it doesn’t stand out significantly from the competition in terms of specs, the HONOR Pad X8a is certainly a tablet worth considering if you’re looking for an affordable option.

As HONOR’s most affordable tablet in the Philippines, the Pad X8a ticks most of the basics one is looking for in a budget tablet. While HONOR could have opted for a better processor, the Pad X8a makes up for it with a great display and a premium build.

In 2014 Huawei created the sub brand Honor and offers certain smartphone series under this name. Occasionally the products are also called Huawei Honor.
The market share of Honor products is manageable, but there are several reviews on Honor smartphones with average ratings (as of 2016).
