Huawei’s smartphone sub-brand, Honor, has arrived in the country late last month via Hellotronics and the first offering is the 2016 flagship announced in August – the Honor 8. Like it’s distant cousin, the Huawei P9, it sports a dual rear camera setup which is one of the most popular features in a smartphone as of late. It’s not officially offered in the Philippines, but is it still worth getting? Find out in our video review below.

The Honor 8 is one of those smartphones that punches above its weight class. It’s smaller than most devices out there but it has a powerful CPU, large RAM, and has a dual camera setup which can produce good images. It also runs Android Nougat now, however, it has a Chinese ROM so you will need to tinker with. If you know what you’re doing, you can try to get your hands on a Global ROM and give it some flashing.

The Honor 8 occupies an interesting space. Cheap Chinese knockoffs of the iPhone have been on the market for years, but Huawei seems to be evolving into its own now. Though the Honor 8 clearly takes a lot of inspiration from the iPhone, it’s not a direct copy, and it manages to balance between Android and iOS quite well.

With a beautiful design and fast processor, the Honor 8 has what it takes to challenge more expensive rivals in the smartphone space. But the phone is more than just another pretty face—it marks Huawei’s maturity against more familiar names in this arena. With the dual-lens camera, a fingerprint sensor that supports quick launching apps and its own take on the smartphone experience with the EMUI on top of Android 6.0, Huawei shows that it can take risks.

After using the Honor 8 for nearly a month, we can say that its one of the best smartphones available at a price tag of 30K. However, there are just a couple of things to mention. There’s no FM radio, no VoLTE. But, Honor 8 will never leave you in despair. On the other hand things are getting tougher as One Plus 3T has launched in India. Huawei has to make a big step this time and soon.

Huawei Honor 8 Review: A Stylish, Affordable Android Smartphone
Source: Hot Hardware English
This brings us to the price. At about a $350 street price, the Honor 8 is several hundred dollars less expensive than most flagships while offering near the same level of performance. It's certainly built just as well. Even better still, we've seen this phone go for as little as $330 at some retailers. That's a sale price, but with the holiday shopping season right around the corner, more markdowns could be in order. Either way, this is the kind of price point that will make smartphone buyers think long and hard whether they want to spend a few hundred bucks more on an incrementally better flagship from the competition.

Honor 8 review - An Honor that looks AND feels like a flagship
Source: Tech Nave English
Overall, the Honor 8 is a superb all-rounder flagship smartphone which looks and performs better than more expensive smartphones out there. We feel that for RM1699 (now RM1619), the Honor 8 really packs in a value busting deal but for many Honor users this may seem like a reasonably high hurdle as most Honor smartphones have kept around the RM1K to RM1.5K range. For those users, all we can say is, you’re getting a lot more for your ringgit than you think.

In simple words, the Honor 8 is a cheaper version of the Huawei P9. At the price point it sports, getting a dual camera is difficult on other handsets. However, smartphones aren't just limited to a dual camera or a decent design - other competing brands possess a larger fan base than the Honor 8. With its specifications, the handset is taking on the likes of the OnePlus 3 and Moto Z Play. And to some extent the Honor 8 does manage to stay in the hunt. With more and more Chinese manufacturers, what will be more interesting to see is how Huawei maintains its 'Honor'.

The Honor 8 is a great device that performs above the asking price. With an improved camera and much better design, it looks like a premium handset you’d be proud to show off… even if can’t stay still on a flat surface. Our only real peeve lies with the Emotion UI, which still feels like a cheap Apple imitation at best. The OnePlus 3 is really the only handset that trumps the Honor 8 in this price range when it comes to value-for-money, which is surely testament to what you’re getting. If you fancy a decent mid-range device that ticks all the boxes, you can’t really go wrong with this.

Now it’s time for a final call on the brand new device from Honor. At a price of Rs 30,000, the Honor 8 is indeed costlier than the competition. But that said, unlike all other devices including the OnePlus 3, Xiaomi Mi5 etc., the Honor 8 is available via offline retail stores. The Huawei Honor 8 Review
Source: AnandTech English
Just like it did with the Honor 5X, Huawei has done a good job finding the right balance between features, performance, and price for the Honor 8. It’s not perfect (I’ve yet to see a phone that is), but it shows a level of polish that other phones at this price and below lack. In a way, the Honor 8 is sort of a sleeper. Sitting among the nearly two dozen phones currently on my desk, the Honor 8 does not really stand out, but if I were to arrange them in a stack from least likely to most likely to use, I would put it near but not at the top.

Honor 8 Review
Source: Fone Arena English
The Honor 8 probably best summarized as being a Huawei P9 in newer and fancier clothing. However, it doesn’t just stop at that. The Honor 8 brings in more RAM, the clickable fingerprint sensor, an even better battery life and more at a more affordable price. If the price was the only reason that put you off from buying the P9 then this is a no brainer, the Honor 8 will definitely impress you. For others, the Honor 8 is a really great smartphone that combines great hardware with great software. Sure, there are a few kinks but perhaps those are things that you can live with considering the pros that the smartphone offers. Sure, the pricing is still on the higher side for the specs it offers.

The phone enjoys a nice design, compact and attractive, even if it’s possibly delicate with the glass background. The phone’s fast CPU but slower GPU give mixed performance. It runs well for most tasks and lasts for a full two days on a single charge, but gamers will want a different phone. The build quality feels like a device twice the price and will challenge the best from Samsung, LG, Sony, and HTC.

Honor 8 review
Source: GSM Arena English
So that's that then - Huawei may be trying to run Honor as a separate brand in some regions, but the Chinese company's design philosophy is clearly visible in the 8. A flashier P9 without the Leica branding we can certainly live with. Knowing you save €150 over the original model makes it a very attractive offer. And there weren't any major corners cut either - outside of the missing film modes and the more limited use of the monochrome sensor the Honor 8 didn't really feel inferior in any way. The glass design might be a bit too flashy for some, but others will certainly prefer it over the metal of the P9.

90% A smartphone that integrates style and photography, and takes on the OnePlus 3
Source: PC Advisor English
The Honor 8 is a fantastic smartphone, but the price has gone up from the Honor 7. In return for the additional expense you get a fantastic dual-camera, a sleek and stylish design, a faster fingerprint sensor and a beautiful display, which combined make the Honor 8 a worthy competitor to the OnePlus 3.

A bargain of a phone - if you can live with it
Source: Android Police English
The Honor 8 is a contradiction. For the right person, this could be a great phone. But for many, it will constitute a hardware:software trade-off that just isn’t all that appealing. Underneath the kludgy EMUI and annoyingly slippery glass exterior lie the building blocks of a very good smartphone. If this phone ran stock Android - or at least stopped getting in Android’s way so much - I may very well have loved it.

80% Honor 8 review
Source: Stuff TV English
The Honor 8 should have been stonkingly good value, thanks to that beautiful design, powerful internals, and cameras that punch well above their weight. The problem was always going to be taking on the ridiculously good deal that is the OnePlus 3. At £370, the Honor 8 is just that little bit too expensive to earn the top spot. If it had amazing battery life, it might have been an easier pull to swallow, but as it is, this doesn't do enough to earn the top spot.

Huawei has brought what many have wanted from an affordable flagship for a while now: a gorgeous design, a smaller size, and a great camera. In addition, the Honor 8’s excellent performance and IR blaster are not always common on an affordable smartphone.

80% Galaxy Quality for Hundreds Less
Source: Tom's Guide English
If you're looking to avoid the sticker shock of pricier flagship phones, you should definitely check out the Honor 8. It offers a head-turning design, fast performance and an impressive dual-lens camera. Just don't expect great-looking pics in low light. And while the Emotion UI adds some nifty features, it doesn't provide the cleanest user experience.

Honor 8 review: A new competitor in the U.S.
Source: Android Central English
Before even approaching the pricing of the Honor 8, this is a really great phone. Externally, it's slick and can grab eyes with a few subtle design features while also feeling solid and built with high tolerances. The metal and glass protect really great internal specs that can power the phone through all of your regular tasks, with a battery that lasts all day (and then some), and you can view it all on a really top-end display. The camera, while coming up short of amazing, is great in many situations and leverages its dual sensors for neat effects and better image quality.

80% A different take on the premium mid-range market
Source: Pocket Lint English
As a day-to-day phone, however, the design and ability of this mid-ranger are considerable. It's an upgrade over the previous model that will give plenty of competitors a run for their money. And yet, despite dual colour/mono cameras being a fun feature, they don't add up to enough to make the phone top the OnePlus 3 overall. That's not so much the Honor 8's shortcoming as it is the OnePlus' class-leading position. Plus there's the £40 price difference to contemplate.

78% Honor 8 Review
Source: Phone Arena English
The Honor 8's one cute little phone, and the company could do a lot worse than to put this model forward as a hook for attracting new US customers. The phone's stylish, feels nice, and doesn't over-sell on features: the only thing that even threatens to verge into gimmick territory is the phone's dual cameras, and they just work so well that we can't find fault there.

The Honor 8 immediately grabs your attention and its plethora of 'hip' features seem to do a good job of making you stick around. While it is slightly more expensive than its predecessor, the Honor 7, its opulent design and sleek feel should put your mind and wallet at ease in the short term.

The Huawei Honor 8 is an attractive unlocked phone with solid overall performance and some cool features you don't commonly see. But there's lots of competition in this price range. The Moto G4 is compatible with all major US carriers, including Verizon and Sprint. The Idol 4S comes with an included VR headset, among a slew of other accessories, and has a Quad HD display. The OnePlus 3 has a more powerful Snapdragon 820 processor, a minimal Android skin, and much longer battery life.

Honor 8 Review: Initial Impressions LIVE from European Launch
Source: Know Your Mobile English
The starting price for the Honor 8, the 32GB version, is £369.99, which seems pretty reasonable for such a high-spec device and keeps the Honor brand's tendency towards affordability front and centre. It will be available from August 24 via Honor's online retail webstore, as well as other retailers including Clove, Ebuyer, and Expansys.

Honor 8 First-Look Review: Hands-on with the latest affordable flagship killer
Source: Digital Spy English
The Honor 8 is a solid, well-rounded smartphone whichever way you spin it. This is obviously no iPhone or Samsung flagship, despite some neat features and a sleek design, but it does enough to propel itself into the conversation in the mid-tier smartphone game and potentially sneak a few customers away with its strong value for money.

Hands on: Honor 8 review
Source: Techradar English
The Honor 8 is a fine phone, one that does a lot of things right, particularly when it comes to its build quality and camera. You get a lot of good phone for the price, but the problem for the Honor 8 is that it doesn't offer anything must-have against similarly priced competitors. There's nothing about it that makes you feel like you have to have this phone.

Budget phone gets big features, Huawei P9 dual cameras and more
Source: Pocket Lint English
The Honor 8 is, in essence, the collision of a Huawei Mate 8 and Huawei P9 - both great phones in their own regard, that have clearly fed into this Honor's lifeblood. There are some software foibles, sure, but with a $400 price tag for the 32GB model (we presume £330 in the UK) it's a definite steal.

Honor 8 Review: The Art Of Refinement

The honor 8 is another excellent choice when it comes to shopping for an affordable flagship smartphone. It is fast, it looks really good, and it offers plenty value for money. From my time with the honor 8, it’s evident that honor has mastered something many brands are still struggling with: refinement.
Positive: Good price; elegant design; decent dual camera.

Comment

Model: The Honor 8 is a beautiful, well-crafted smartphone that blows much of the competition out of the water. Users will definitely experience premium build quality and eye-catching design details such as the 15-layers of light-catching glass finish at the rear of the phone. The sleek device has a full metal bezel cut to perfection giving off a luxurious feel in hand. There are five colors to choose from; pearl white, sunrise gold, midnight black, sakura pink and sapphire blue. In particular, the sapphire blue is a unique offering and makes the Honor 8 look great. The smartphone measures in at 145.5 x 71 x 7.5 mm and weighs 153 g. In terms of design, it takes a huge chunk of its exclusiveness and curves from the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S7 but uses it in its own unique ways. The body colored volume rocker and power button sits on the right side of the phone and looks really solid.

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow smartphone has dual SIM capability built in, but users should bear in mind that the second SIM slot is the same slot used to add a microSD card to expand the phone’s memory by up to 256 GB. As such, the choice is between expanding the Honor 8’s memory or using 2 SIMs. Display on the Honor 8 is a breath-taking 5.2-inch Full HD LTPS screen with 423 ppi pixel density allowing for stunning clarity and color saturation, which truly comes close to Samsung’s AMOLED display. At the rear of the device, there are two 12 MP f/2.2 laser autofocus cameras with dual LED flash, which support Full HD recording in HDR mode. The front holds in the 8 MP camera for selfies and video calls. Audio is bright and loud to give a complete multimedia package. In addition, the Honor 8 comes with a rear fingerprint sensor, which works almost instantly just like in most of the newer smartphones from its parent company, Huawei.

On-board is Huawei’s very own HiSilicon Kirin 950 chipset with four 2.3 GHz Cortex-A72 and four 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 cores for a total of 8 cores. It is accompanied by a Mali-T880 MP4 GPU for gaming purposes. There are two variants, one with 3 GB of RAM with 32 GB internal storage and another one with 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of storage. The Honor 8 comes with USB Type-C, NFC, an infrared port, A-GPS and a battery rated at 3000 mAh for good battery life. The Honor 8 is a reasonably priced flagship smartphone with hardware that rivals with the better-known brands out there. In some ways, it is even a competition to Huawei’s very own P9 model which is higher priced.

ARM Mali-T880 MP4: Mobile graphics solution for tablets and smartphones, which can be found in ARM SoCs like the HiSilicon Kirin 950. Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Kirin 950: ARM based octa-core SoC containing four Cortex-A72 cores for performance tasks and four Cortex-A53 cores to save power. Furthermore, the SoC integrates an LTE radio and a ARM Mali-T880 MP4 GPU.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
5.2":

This display is quite big for a smartphone but frequently used for smartphones.

Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
0.153 kg:

Only few smartphones are more lightweight than this.

Honor:

In 2014 Huawei created the sub brand Honor and offers certain smartphone series under this name. Occasionally the products are also called Huawei Honor.

The market share of Honor products is manageable, but there are several reviews on Honor smartphones with average ratings (as of 2016).

82.86%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
