Honda Prologue electric SUV meant as 2023 CR-V upgrade with more 'generous passenger and cargo space'

Honda is positioning its first all-electric SUV for the North American market - the Prologue - as a natural transition from the just-announced 2023 CR-V hybrid. The Prologue will be larger than the CR-V, with more interior space and a signature new made-in-LA design.

The upcoming first electric SUV for the US market by Honda - its 2024 Prologue model - will actually be bigger than the company's bread-and-butter CR-V model which just got its 2023 edition unveiled. Honda finally revealed the design of the Prologue, along with its dimensions, and said that its first all-electric SUV "will have a wheelbase of 121.8-inches, and is about 8-inches longer and 5-inches wider than the all-new 2023 Honda CR-V."

Thankfully, the Prologue will also get a brand new design and not the styling of the current CR-V model. It's been created at the Honda Design Studio in Los Angeles and the "generous passenger and cargo space" dimensions put it right smack in Honda's light truck portfolio, next to the Passport.

In fact, Honda pegs the 2023 hybrid CR-V that launches this October, as a stopgap vehicle for the transition to the all-electric Prologue in Zero-Emission Vehicle US states like California. According to Gary Robinson, VP of automobile planning and strategy at American Honda:

We are not going to wait until 2024 to attract EV buyers, because we see a natural progression for a CR-V customer to Prologue with its slightly larger size, larger interior and capable handling. We will support that transition now by putting smart strategies in place with the CR-V hybrid, that will enable our customers to transition to an EV.

The Prologue has been developed in partnership with General Motors on its flexible Ultium EV platform, so, even though Honda left the exact specs for a later date, it should really be powered by a drivetrain similar to the 2024 Chevy Blazer electric SUV. The cheapest 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV 2LT has a range of 293 miles, optional AWD version, and a starting price of S$47,595 when it gets released in Q3 2023.

Honda says that the Prologue will be available in an all-wheel drive configuration, too, but the interior and exterior are rather different than what we've glimpsed about the Ultium-based Blazer.

The front is distinctively Honda e, resembling its iconic small EV, while a "neo-rugged design styling that's familiar to our customers and uniquely Honda" awaits future customers. They can also expect 21-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, and two 11-inch displays - for the driver and the infotainment system - in a "tech-rich cabin," tips Honda.
