Cybertruck and Honda Prologue prove surprisingly popular as monthly EV lease payments drop 40%
Thanks to the 16,692 Cybertruck unit sales in Q3, Tesla now occupies the top 3 positions in the ranking of America's most popular electric vehicles.
Fourth is the Ford Mustang Mach-E with 13,392 units sold, and there is a new and surprising entrant in the top 5, the Honda Prologue that managed to move 12,644 electric SUVs.
One reason might be the affordable Prologue leases that start from $289/month, as leasing is now the most popular way to buy an EV in America with 80% share, up from just 16% at the beginning of the year. In fact, with the slump of new EV prices, the average monthly payment on their lease has now fallen drastically from $950 to $582.
Second-hand EVs are also piling up on dealers' lots, forcing them to cut prices by 25%, with the average selling price of a used EV falling below that of a gas-powered vehicle now.
Still, the $100,000 Cybertruck managed to become the third bestselling EV in the US last quarter, and given that Tesla is already shipping a cheaper non-Foundation Series version, it will likely stay there in Q4 as well.
The Model Y and Model 3, which are America's most popular and second bestselling electric car, respectively, are also likely to keep their place at the top as Tesla introduced generous 0% APR financing and zero down payment deals for them.
