A stylish desktop replacement laptop that looks good and plays hard; top value too.

The HP G72-250us ($749.98 list) costs and weighs less than most desktop replacement laptops while offering close to the same application performance as its higher-end 17.3-inch competitors. Unfortunately, the audio output is weak, which is all the more disappointing considering its intended use as an entertainment laptop. The G72-250us, sold at Staples, boasts an updated design, part of HP's latest laptop makeover. Inside, it features an Intel Core i3 processor, which serves up excellent performance for the price. There are better options for multimedia consumption, but for general home use, the HP G72-250us offers up a big screen, an attractive design, and ample performance for a fair price.

It's a very nice little package, and one we'd be proud to own for the price. We wouldn't actually tell anyone it was so cheap, of course. No. A screen this big and defined belongs in a much more expensive machine.

The HP G72-a10SA is a fair replacement for a desktop PC. The size, weight and battery life mean it's not portable, but it coped fine with playing DVDs and internet video, as well as general office and internet use. Unlike most larger laptops it's no good for gamers but otherwise it's reasonable value.

We appreciated the G72-a10SA's strong feature set considering the low price, while the colourful display is excellent for anyone wishing to watch movies or view photos. Portability and performance are limited, however, so this is best used as a basic home office machine.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5430: DirectX 11 chip with the codename Park LP, slowest clocked HD 5400 series chip.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.

Intel Core i3:
330M:
The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
350M:
The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Pentium:
P6000: The Pentium P6000 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Celeron P4500, the P6000 offers a bit better performance due to the faster System Bus and an increased Level 3 cache. However, VT-x is not available for the P6000.

2.8 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3 kg:
70.29%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
