Google is backing itself to sell a record amount of Pixel smartphones with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
The first Pixel 6 series announcement hinted that Google was planning to re-enter the flagship smartphone market, not least because the pair would debut an in-house SoC. Then Google confirmed that it had increased its marketing budget for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro compared to past Pixel smartphones, which has fallen well short of Apple and Samsung in the past.
Now, Nikkei Asia reports that Google is better big on Pixel 6 series sales, and has increased production relative to the Pixel 5 or Pixel 4 series. Apparently, Google's supply chain will produce 50% more smartphones than it did in 2019, when it shipped more than 7 million handsets. For context, Pixel smartphone sales dropped to 3.7 million in 2020.
Hence, Google is expecting to crack 10 million Pixel 6 series sales, which is well down on what Apple manages with its flagship iPhones. Nonetheless, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro could be market disrupters when they arrive next month, thanks to their unique SoC and vastly improved camera hardware compared to previous Pixel smartphones. The pair will offer first-class software support too, and should receive up to at least Android 15.
