The update to Android 15 for eligible Pixel phones, including the recently announced Pixel 9 series, is not coming anytime soon. However, the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) release is scheduled for next week.

There was a time when the announcement of a new version of Android coincided with the launch of new Google smartphones, but that wasn't the case this year. The new Pixel 9 (available on Amazon for $799) series all ship with Android 14 which was released last year, and for these devices and other Pixel smartphones that are still eligible for OS upgrades, the update to Android 15 will be coming late this year.

According to a report by Android Authority, a source informed them that the Android 15 update will be released sometime in October, possibly in the middle of the month. That info has now been confirmed by release notes for the Android Beta Exit update which states that Android 15 will be available in October. Although it doesn't say when in October.

It has also been reported that the Android 15 source code will be released next week, on September 3, 2024, which is earlier than that of Android 14 which was released on October 4, 2023 while the stable update was released for Pixel smartphones in October.

When Android 15 begins to roll out, it will bring several new features such as partial screen sharing which allows users to share or record an app instead of the entire device; a redesigned volume control panel; and a device diagnostics menu that lets you run display and touch tests as well as check the health of your battery.
