A new report has delivered fresh details about Google's next mid-range smartphone. While the Pixel 9a may only cost as much as the current Pixel 8a when it launches, it should feature a bounty of upgrades over its predecessor.

The Google Pixel 9a is set to arrive less than a year after the Pixel 8a (curr. $499 on Amazon). However, leaked specifications suggest that quite a few differences could exist between generations. For instance, the Pixel A series is set to grow from 6.1-inches to 6.3-inches, which would make the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9a roughly the same size as each other.

With that being said, the Pixel 9a must make do with a 120 Hz AMOLED panel that can only drop to 60 Hz on demand; the device misses out on LTPO backplane hardware necessary for true variable refresh rates. Moreover, the next Pixel A series handset should feature a 13% larger battery that tops 5,000 mAh. The Pixel 9a will only be capable of recharging this large battery at up to 7.5 W wirelessly or 18 W using a wired connection.

Predictably, Google will employ its Tensor G4 chip, which it will pair with 8 GB of RAM and either 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. Meanwhile, the Pixel 9a should feature a new 48 MP primary camera, plus the same 13 MP front-facing and ultra-wide-angle cameras from its predecessor. Reportedly, the Pixel 9a will debut in March 2025 for $499, thereby price matching the Pixel 8a.
