Google has snuck in a new feature for the Pixel 6 Pro within the first Android 13 QPR2 beta. Available to download for the Pixel 4a onwards, Android 13 QPR2 should reach stable status sometime in March 2023.

9to5Google has discovered information within Android 13 QPR2 Beta 1 about the Pixel 6 Pro, the battery life of which remains a drawback over a year after its introduction. For context, the Pixel 6 Pro fell well short of the iPhone 13 Pro and Xiaomi 12 Pro despite having significantly larger batteries than both smartphones. According to the website, the first beta of Android 13's next quarterly update includes a 1080p display mode setting for the Pixel 6 Pro, a feature that the Pixel 7 Pro has shipped with since launch day.

Currently, the Pixel 6 Pro remains restricted to rendering everything at 1440p, which is not necessarily the most power-efficient way of doing things. Switching to 1080p would reduce the effective resolution by approximately 44% and decrease the volume of pixels that the Google Tensor needs to render. Capping the Pixel 6 Pro's refresh rate at 60 Hz should also improve battery life too though, potentially more so than switching from 1440p to 1080p.

Still, it is good to see Google bring new features to its older flagships. If you are running Android 13 QPR2 Beta 1 on your Pixel 6 Pro, you can test the new mode by heading to Display in the main Settings menu. From there, you should be presented with a 'Screen resolution' panel with options for 'High' and 'Full' resolutions, as shown below. Google is expected to release a stable version of Android 13 QPR2 in March 2023, having recently issued Android 13 QPR1 to Pixel devices.
