Google Pixel 5a launch date reportedly set with a US$50 lower price tag than the Pixel 4a (5G)
Google may have recently revealed the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, to an extent, but it has another smartphone to release before its 2021 flagships. The device in question is the Pixel 5a, a rumoured re-hash of last year's Pixel 4a (5G). Google has already confirmed that the Pixel 5a will only make its way to the US and Japan, but it remains quiet on a release date.
In June, Mark Gurman alleged that Google would start selling the Pixel 5a in August, which Jon Prosser has now refined to August 26. Apparently, the Pixel 5a will only be available in Google's physical store, based in New York, and through its online stores, rather than through carriers and third-party retailers too.
Contrary to previous rumours, Prosser alleges that the Pixel 5a has a 6.4-inch display powered by a Snapdragon 765G chipset and a 4,650 mAh battery. Previously, it had been suggested that Google would completely re-use the Pixel 4a (5G), which has a 6.2-inch display and a 3,885 mAh battery.
The Google Pixel 5a is expected to launch for US$450, almost US$50 cheaper than the Pixel 4a (5G). The timing of the device's release implies that the Pixel 5a will ship with Android 11 too, instead of the upcoming Android 12. Hence, the Pixel 5a should receive OS updates up to Android 14.
