Google Pixel 5a release date leaks; Android 11 more or less confirmed for mid-range handset
According to Mark Gurman, Google has set the announcement month for the Pixel 5a, one of three Pixel smartphones due this year. Unfortunately, Google is still only expected to release the Pixel 5a in the US and Japan.
Writing in his Bloomberg newsletter, Gurman stated that Google plans to unveil the Pixel 5a in August, roughly a year after the Pixel 4a debuted. Gurman also expects to begin selling the Pixel 5a during that same month, like the Pixel 4a. There is no word on if the Pixel 5a will ship in August too, though.
Nonetheless, the Pixel 5a may arrive a month or two before Android 12 and the Pixel 6 series. If that is the case, then Google will ship the Pixel 5a with the soon to be replaced Android 11. The Pixel 5a is expected to be a rebadged Pixel 4a 5G, with the same SoC, display and cameras. By contrast, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro seem to be new designs with Google's first in-house SoC, codenamed GS101.
