Google has, until now, released flagship smartphones under its Pixel series. The 3a and 3a XL change this with their midrange pricing. The premise of these devices is flagship cameras on a budget, but how well has Google executed this idea? Read on to find out in this detailed review.
90% Google Pixel 3a XL review, one year later: Still the best camera under $500
Source: Android Central English Archive.org version
The Pixel 3a XL continues to be a great phone a year after its launch. The interface is still fluid and lag-free, you get a 3.5mm jack, vibrant OLED panel, and excellent battery life, and the promise of quick updates. But the main reason for buying the Pixel 3a XL in 2020 is the camera — and the phone continues to lead the way in this area. You're not going to find a $500 phone with a better camera in the market today.

For the most part, the Pixel 3a XL makes the right compromises to hit a more affordable price point. This is the same Pixel experience you get on the full-fat Pixel 3 right down to the image quality. An affordable phone, however, this is not. In markets like India, fierce competition makes the Pixel 3a XL hard to justify unless an excellent camera is your primary motivation to buy a premium smartphone.

Budget phones have long made sense for most people. If you can pick up 90% of the phone for 50% of the price, that’s a good compromise, right? It seems that while the logic is there, consumers disagreed. Flagships are still the most exciting thing in Android with most headlines dedicated to new chapters from Samsung, LG, and OnePlus.

While it’s nice to have the latest flagship device, it isn’t necessarily necessary. For what most people use a smartphone for, the Pixel 3a XL is a fantastic choice — especially considering it comes with the same great camera as its more expensive counterparts. If you’re in the market for a new smartphone, you should definitely check out the Pixel 3a XL or the slightly smaller Pixel 3a and save yourself more than a few dollars. There’s no doubt it is deserving of a Top Pick of 2019 Award here at Techaeris.

Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL review: Mid-range smartphones never looked so good

In summary, Google has packed these phones with slower processors and cut back on some of the premium materials used in the Google Pixel 3 flagships launched last October. Importantly, that fantastic single-lens rear camera stays the same – you should be able to get the same shots from either the mid-range or flagship Pixels.

The Google Pixel 3a XL Review: Does Mid-Range Make Sense?
Source: AnandTech English Archive.org version
In terms of design, there’s nothing really exciting about the Pixel 3a XL. Google opted to keep it safe, avoiding any notch or fancier screen design, and simply went for the larger top and bottom bezels on the front of the phone. Whilst this isn’t a terrible design choice, it’s to be noted you can get a lot more modern looking phones from the competition.

80% Google Pixel 3a XL review: don't mourn the notch
Source: T3 English Archive.org version
Want the mind-bogglingly awesome Pixel 3 camera and lashings of screen real estate, but don't fancy coughing up £869 for the Pixel 3 XL? Google Pixel 3a XL is impossible bargain. Granted, there are some compromises – the screen isn't as good, and it's unwieldy compared to rivals with all-screen designs. But the notch-less Pixel 3a XL remains an impressive mid-range smartphone, with fast-charging and three years of the latest Android OS features guaranteed – no mean feat at this price point. That said, all of these features can be found on the Pixel 3a, which is £70 and less unwieldy thanks to its (slightly) smaller 5.6-inch display.

All that said, if your priorities don’t match mine, couldn’t care less about the Pixel experience, or you prefer a more trendy phone, there are plenty of alternatives. The new Huawei P30 Lite is one. Priced at just S$398, the P30 Lite features a 6.15-inch teardrop display, runs on Huawei’s midrange Kirin 710 processor, comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, and offers a triple-lens rear camera setup. The newer S$849 Oppo Reno, which has a faster Snapdragon 710 processor, a notch-less display, a dual-lens rear camera, and an A.I.-powered Ultra Night Mode, is another interesting phone that arrived in stores recently.

Source: Tech PP English Archive.org version
All of which makes the Pixel 3a XL a very hard sell at Rs 44,999. Yes, its cameras outgun everyone else in that range (and a little above it as well) it is no match for the budget and lower-premium flagship segment which bring better processors, more RAM and storage, better displays, bigger batteries, in-display fingerprint scanners and a whole lot of fancy notch placements and designs to the party. Indeed, at the time of writing, some online retailers were selling the Pixel 3 XL for a price in the vicinity of Rs 55,000. It is not as if the Pixel 3a XL is a bad device. It isn’t. It just is a little out of place in the current market scenario.

Google Pixel 3a XL Review

Google has for sure cut some corners with the Pixel 3a XL. The polycarbonate body looks quite dated and there is no waterproofing or wireless charging support like the Pixel 3 lineup. However, the software does the real magic here. The smartphone, despite sporting a less powerful chipset, delivers almost Pixel-like experience. The cameras are the strong points of this device and it is certainly best-in-class. Battery life is decent as well and the display looks good, though it lacks HDR support. If you are one of those who want a pure Android experience along with some good camera performance, then Pixel 3a XL is best suited for you.

Its design may not be head-turning, but the Google Pixel 3a XL packs a punch internally and has a great camera for the price. It's some of the best of Google in a phone, at a lower price tag than previous Pixel handsets. So again, she may not light up the benchmarks, but for all it does so well, its fabulous camera and its aggressive price point, you really can't go wrong with the Google Pixel 3a XL and likely the standard Pixel 3a as well, if you're looking for a smaller device. Google incorporated much of what mainstream consumers are looking for in a device with the Pixel 3a series, and at a price point that the masses can justify. No doubt, these new Pixels will sell like hotcakes with their excellent battery life, and in a saturated market of devices well north of $600 or $700, most times with a similar feature set. With the Pixel 3a XL and Pixel 3a, Google just nailed the mid-range smartphone.

Google Pixel 3a to 3a XL: Differences, Hands-on Review
Source: Androidbeat English Archive.org version
Android power users should still be tempted to still look for the original Pixel 3 XL at clearance or second-hand prices, because of the faster chipset, the possibility of 128GB storage, the more balanced speakers, the Qi charging and the official waterproofing, and damn the notch! For the mainstream, to get Google’s software and updates along with that camera system at half the cost of many flagships, means that the Pixel 3a XL should do very well indeed. If you want a more compact feel in the hand and lower price then go for the smaller ‘3a’, but the 3a XL definitely has its own place in the Pixel Continuum.

In India, this is just too expensive for the kind of specifications it is packing, and the kind of features that Google has removed. Yes, the camera is excellent, but that alone cannot justify the price tag. There’s certainly a compromise here in terms of the overall package, and it appears more ‘premium’ than ‘affordable’ in India.

Source: Android Central English Archive.org version
Releasing the Pixel 3a lineup halfway through its flagships' product cycle appears like a strange move, but Google admitted during its recent quarterly earnings that it's not selling as many Pixel 3s as it would like; the high-end phone market is seriously competitive. So where is the remaining growth opportunity? In markets where the Pixel either doesn't yet sell, or is too expensive. Places like India, Latin America and parts of Europe where the Pixel brand doesn't hold sway. By introducing a sub-$500 phone to those regions that promises to offer the best camera you can buy, plus three years of platform updates and security patches, feels like a pretty shrewd move. We'll just have to see if it pays off.

Coming to the final judgement, the Google 3a XL overall captures some detailed shots. The colour reproduction is quite close to the source and the sharpness is impressive in nature. The phone delivers output, which is almost identical to the Pixel 3 lineup. Using Portrait mode was a sheer delight with the Pixel 3a XL. However, it does take some noticeable amount of time in processing as compared to Pixel 3. This is mainly because of the absence of Google’s Pixel Visual Core. That said, the phone does an excellent job when it comes to the broad daylight performance, though selfie experience is not that great.

Even beyond the basics, the 3a XL features a few touches that fans have been clamoring for, like a headphone jack and the biggest battery Google has ever put into a Pixel. The Google Pixel 3a XL makes for a great big-screened Pixel 3 alternative, without the price tag. It nails the software and camera experiences so important to capturing the feel of the full-fat Pixel 3 series, in spite of its more affordable nature. However, its price tag places it up against more capable and more powerful rivals.

Google Pixel 3a XL review: Hands-on
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
The Pixel 3a XL seems like a decent enough mid-range smartphone, bringing some flagship Pixel features to those with less money to spend on a phone. There is tough competition at this price, though, so it's not an instant no-brainer. You also need to consider whether getting the smaller Pixel 3a is a better choice because it's pretty much the same phone, just with a smaller screen and battery.

Pixel 3a XL vs Pixel 3 XL
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
There are, then, some fairly significant differences between the Pixel 3a XL and Pixel 3 XL. Depending on your priorities, and budget of course, you might well be happy with the trade-offs and consider the 3a XL to be a better-value phone. But if you’d prefer the security of the 3 XL’s water resistance, the convenience of wireless charging and the power of the faster processor, you may be happy to spend the extra on the 3 XL.

Comment

Model: Budget friendly phones have become a norm in the smartphone industry. In fact, companies are selling more affordable phones compared to their flagship lines. Google has decided to jump in the “Lite” version bandwagon by introducing a cheaper version of their only smartphone model, the Google Pixel. The Pixel 3a series are priced at around half the price of the regular Pixel series. The Pixel 3a XL is the bigger one of the two. Unlike the usual budget smartphone gig, this doesn’t reduce the price by maintaining high specs and reducing in other areas such as screen and camera. The Pixel 3a attempts to do things in a different way by including the exact same camera as the Pixel 3 XL. As a result, this budget smartphone captures photos that are even better than most flagships out there. Some tests have put the image quality in front of the latest flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and even the Huawei P30 Pro. It’s in the other areas that the ‘a’ in the Pixel 3a XL comes to light. The biggest change is the size of the phone. As a result of the larger bezels on all corners, the phone is now a little bit taller and bigger than the regular XL. To be precise, its dimensions are 160.1 x 76.1 x 8.2 mm as opposed to the regular Pixel which is only 7.9 mm thick. It also uses a plastic body as opposed to the glass body which means there is no wireless charging in this phone.

The screen size on the XL has been reduced from a 6.3 inch to a 6 inch OLED display. The resolution has also been reduced from the higher 1,440 x 2,960 pixels to 1,080 x 2,160 pixels. Another major difference is the notch. For good or bad, the notch on the Pixel 3 XL is not carried down to the Pixel 3a XL. The protection on the screen is also different. The Pixel 3 uses the regular, industry leading Corning Gorilla Glass 5 while the 3a uses Asahi Dragontail Glass. Its durability can only be proven later. On the inside, the Pixel 3a XL skimps down a little bit on hardware, making it slightly slower than the regular unit. It uses a mid-range processor, the Snapdragon 670 versus the Pixel 3’s Snapdragon 845. This is paired with only 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. There is still no card slot to expand the memory. As spoken earlier, the main camera is the same 12.2 MP, f/1.8 wide angle camera. This is where the Pixel 3a XL really shines over all of its competitors. In the front, there is only a single 8 MP camera as opposed to the Pixel 3’s dual camera setup. The Pixels 3a XL maintains its high standards in other areas too. There is the latest Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type-C charger for fast charging of its 3,700 mAh battery. The fingerprint scanner is mounted on the rear part of the phone and the headphones jack at the bottom. The Pixel 3a XL comes in three colors, Just Black, Clearly White and Purple-ish. The Pixel 3a XL is the ultimate budget smartphone. At its price, it easily takes out all its competitors in terms of performance and camera. However, it really lacks in terms of outlook. The older thick bezels design really doesn’t fit in today’s smartphone theme. However, for those who need the ultimate Google experience, this is definitely a choice.

6.00":

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.
