Squeezing so much into a sub-1kg chassis is impressive, but Gigabyte has made too many compromises. The noisy fan and high temperatures are due to a chassis pushed to the limits of its thermal capabilities, and poor build and ergonomics undermine its appeal. It’s light and powerful, but the X11 is too rough around the edges.

Squeezing this much power into a sub-1kg chassis is an impressive feat, but it’s clear that Gigabyte has had to make far too many compromises along the way. The noisy fan and high temperatures are symptomatic of a chassis pushed right to the limits of its thermal capabilities, and the poor ergonomics and build serve to further undermine its appeal. It’s light and powerful, but at £1,000, this Ultrabook is simply far too rough around the edges.

With ultrabooks dropping left, right and centre, to stand out, a new model has to be the best-est at something. The Gigabyte X11 is not only ridiculously lightweight and slim, it also packs enough power under the hood to tackle demanding tasks. If Gigabyte can sort out a couple of small issues with the keyboard and trackpad before it goes on sale, it's a seriously good product to consider buying.

Gigabyte: Gigabyte Technology is a Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer founded in 1986, best known for its motherboards and graphics cards. Gigabyte offers a wide range of products including motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, monitors, systems and components. Gigabyte's laptops offer gaming and creative features on the go. Gigabyte monitors offer 4K Pro Gaming.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

Intel Core i5:

3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.  

3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
