German automotive market in September: Twice as many new electric cars as in September 2025

The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Flensburg regularly publishes reports and statistics covering vehicles and the automotive market. Today, October 5, the KBA released its data on vehicle registrations for September 2026. The figures provide insights into the most popular car brands, powertrain types, and much more.
A total of 256,774 passenger cars were registered in Germany in September 2026. That represents an increase of +9 percent compared with the same month a year earlier. While private registrations rose by a substantial 28.5 percent, commercial registrations fell slightly by -1.2 percent.
The technological shift is particularly interesting. Pure electric cars, in particular, clearly continue to gain ground. Compared with September 2025, registrations of battery-electric vehicles nearly doubled (+94.7%), giving them a 34.5 percent share of the market. Gasoline and diesel vehicles accounted for 26.4 percent. Hybrid vehicles currently make up the largest share at 38.5 percent, with plug-in hybrids accounting for 10.8 percent. However, hybrid growth was significantly weaker than that of pure electric vehicles, increasing by just +1.7 percent compared with 2025.

Among German car brands, Volkswagen remained the most popular (16.5 percent market share), although new registrations fell by -6.1 percent compared with the same month a year earlier. Porsche saw an even sharper decline (-18.8%), while Audi posted a slight increase (+4%). BMW also edged down slightly (-2.4%). Among import brands, Tesla saw a significant increase, with more than 4,000 new registrations in September (+268.7%), followed by BYD (+85.6%).
