Garmin releases first beta updates for Fenix 8 smartwatches with nine new features
Garmin has launched the first two beta updates, software versions 11.81 and 11.82, for the Fenix 8 AMOLED, Fenix 8 Solar, Enduro 3 and Fenix E smartwatches. The change log for the original release is extensive, with nine new features listed.
These include the ability to switch between third-party maps in the Map Layers Menu and a data screen that allows you to track your skiing or snowboarding difficulty. There is a new Autolap by Position tool, the ability to adjust display brightness using voice commands, and you can connect to Wi-Fi through Map Manager. Garmin has confirmed that it has tried to resolve an issue flagged by users when using the watch in cold water; this could be linked to a new water ejection feature. There are several improvements to the always-on watch face brightness and power consumption on the Map page. On top of this, 21 bug fixes are included in this update, tackling issues with battery drain, workout cancellation and the active timer count. The second update lists just four changes, including a bug fix for turn-by-turn alerts.
Software version 11.81 for the Garmin Fenix 8 smartwatch (47mm model curr. $999.99 at Amazon) and other related smartwatches is not being sent automatically to beta testers. Instead, you have to go to Menu > System > Software Update > Check For Updates. It is worth noting that, when using beta software, the ECG and Dive features are disabled.
