Garmin Catalyst 2 head-up display with camera and audio coach launches

The Garmin Catalyst 2 is a compact all-in-one device that combines a camera with a display and is made for racers. Garmin explicitly notes that the system should not be used on public roads. While this is not necessarily prohibited, users should never let the device’s guidance encourage them to break speed limits or any other traffic laws on public roads. The 3-inch display has a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels and can show lap times, which can be compared with your own record, for example.
Garmin’s new device can do more than just display data. According to the company, you can hear real-time audio prompts via a headset or the car speakers, which are intended to provide guidance for better acceleration and braking. After each session, Garmin says three segments with the greatest potential for improvement are shown, so no extensive analysis is needed.
To provide reliable data, the system primarily relies on 25Hz GPS, which is used to calculate speed and (negative) acceleration. An accelerometer is included as well. Laps can also be recorded with the built-in 1440p camera and then saved with an optional Garmin Vault subscription and accessed via the accompanying app. The platform also offers some social features, such as comparing performance on the same track, not only across all sessions overall but also filtered by season, day, year, and vehicle make and model. That way, users do not have to feel discouraged if the lap time of their Toyota Camry can’t match a BMW M3, for instance. Either way, the Garmin Catalyst 2 will launch on February 20 for $1,199.
