This past week has seen some new renders that indicate Google will follow the latest trend in display technology for its upcoming flagship smartphone. These images showed devices with the typical Pixel design language, but with a selfie camera that could have come from the Galaxy S10+. This indicates that this phone (likely to be called the 4 XL) will have two front-facing cameras, but will not need a notch to house them this year.
A subsequent leak from a Twitter account called PhoneDesigner suggests that the smaller Pixel 4 will also get in on this action. In its case, however, the punch-hole will only accomodate 1 selfie camera. This assertion is set out in a series of realistic images that show both the Pixel 4 and 4 XL with their state-of-the-art front panels. Their reverse sides exhibit cameras that match the 'punch-holes' exactly, however. This is not a point in the leak's favor, as both phones may still increase their total image-sensor counts this year.
Both phones are also depicted as finished in a shade of white, which is a typical staple of Pixel devices. It is not clear when these leaks may be verified, although the Google I/O 2019 event - which takes place in May - is a good candidate. In any case, the effect of the punch-hole in both putative phones may be a considerable improvement on the Pixel 3 series' epic notches (and chins) for many consumers: the popular tech vlogger, MKBHD has already responded somewhat positively to this new leak.
