A standard Game Boy Advance SP (currently priced at around $180 on Amazon) runs for about 10 hours on its original battery. For Reddit user u/Bangooh, that just wasn’t enough. Instead of opting for the usual lithium-ion upgrade, he took a more unconventional route: a DeWalt battery pack rated at 162,000 mWh – roughly 45,000 mAh at 3.6 volts. That’s the kind of power source you’d typically find in a cordless drill or even a lawn mower.
The result is a GBA that looks like it came straight out of a workshop – quite literally. Mounted underneath the console is a bulky yellow-and-black battery pack, connected via a custom-built adapter. Inside the battery compartment, a low-cost voltage converter steps down the high output to a level the GBA can safely handle.
According to u/Bangooh, a single charge is enough to “play most RPGs from start to finish” – theoretically offering around 404 hours of runtime, or nearly 17 days of nonstop gaming. The design is equally impressive: he matched the color scheme to DeWalt’s signature look, complete with both Nintendo and DeWalt logos. The result looks so polished that many Reddit users joked it could be an official product – purpose-built for the job site.
The community’s reaction has been mostly amused. The top comment captures the general mood perfectly: “This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. That being said I want one” The mod isn’t fully finished yet, as the L and R buttons are still missing. u/Bangooh is also testing the setup’s endurance using the Play-Yan music player, so chances are we haven’t heard the last of the DeWalt GBA project.
