First alleged iPad Mini 3 photo appeared earlier this week coming from an undisclosed source and was published for the first time by a French website. This image shows what appears to be an early prototype of Apple's upcoming iPad Mini update featuring the Touch ID fingerprint sensor introduced with the iPhone 5S. While this whole story needs to be taken with a large grain of salt, it provides quite a few details on the device, including its release date.
According to nowhereelse.fr, the iPad Mini 3 should arrive in November 2014 and the specs listed seem about the same as the ones currently offered by the Retina iPad Mini - 1.7 GHz dual-core A7 processor, 7.9-inch Retina display, 5 MP camera, 1 GB of memory and internal storage between 16 GB and 128 GB.
The prices displayed are almost the same as those listed by Apple's French website for the current generation Retina iPad Mini, starting at 339 EUR for the 16 GB version and going as high as 675 EUR for the 128 GB one (there is no mention on 3G, 4G LTE or WiFi editions, unfortunately).
At this stage not even the iPad Mini 3 name is a safe bet but the introduction of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor is very likely. Since the case of the device shown in the photo looks like it is made out of cheap plastic this is either a cheap Chinese copy or a very early prototype. We will get back to this topic as soon as new information becomes available.
