Figure 02, an upgraded version of the Figure 01 introduced in October 2023, was first revealed in August 2024. Equipped with six RGB cameras, depth cameras and infrared sensors, the humanoid robot from the Californian start-up Figure AI offers a full 360-degree field of vision. With 16 degrees of freedom in its hands, it is engineered to match human precision and strength, making it well-suited for intricate two-handed tasks.
Through its collaboration with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, Figure 02 is designed to understand voice commands and make independent decisions, enabling it to function as a "thinking" partner. During a test phase at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, USA, the robot demonstrated its practical capabilities. The video below provides a glimpse of its performance:
First commercial delivery of Figure 02
Figure AI founder and CEO Brett Adcock revealed in a LinkedIn post that Figure 02 is already "hard at work", signaling its first delivery to a customer. However, details about its deployment location and sale price remain undisclosed. This milestone represents a significant step toward the commercialization of humanoid robots.
Backed by investors like Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia and Jeff Bezos, Figure AI boasts a valuation of $2.6 billion, making it one of the most well-funded start-ups in the field. The first delivery likely brings the company closer to Tesla, whose Optimus robot is still only used in its own factories. Remarkably, Figure AI progressed from its founding in January 2022 to monetizing its product in just 31 months.
