After years of anticipation, Battlestate Games has officially confirmed that its hardcore survival extraction shooter, Escape from Tarkov, is finally coming to Steam, after the game spent nearly eight years in Early Access via its dedicated launcher since its debut in July 2017.
Battlestate studio head Nikita Buyanov officially announced on X that Escape from Tarkov’s Steam page will be available soon, while also teasing an image of the store page. While this is just a glimpse, he mentioned that more concrete details would be shared later.
The game’s hardcore community has largely grown outside of Steam, which features incredibly unforgiving gameplay that features realistic ballistics, an in-depth loot system, and extraction mechanics that FPS titles rarely strive to achieve.
Escape from Tarkov’s Steam announcement coincides with the game's departure from Early Access and its preparation for a full 1.0 release on November 15, 2025, as previously revealed by Buyanov in a prior X post.
For over eight years, Battlestate Games has consistently rolled out content updates and patch fixes for Escape from Tarkov, including new maps, weapons, and overhauled mechanics to keep the game modernized and fresh.
While Escape from Tarkov’s Steam release date is still undisclosed, it’s speculated that the game will launch on the platform alongside its 1.0 update, aiming to attract newcomers who have held off from playing the game due to its absence from Steam’s ecosystem.
The game has a robust player base, who praise Escape from Tarkov for its brutally realistic gameplay, despite prior controversies over monetization practices such as the premium Edge of Darkness edition and paywalled content.
Still, players who have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours in Escape from Tarkov are concerned about account linking and platform cross-progression, as no official word is out on whether existing players would have to repurchase the game, or if their years' worth of achievements, leveling, and inventories will be wiped or seamlessly carried over.
Previously, Battlestate Games stated that Escape from Tarkov would first arrive on the Epic Games Store; however, contrary to its initial statement, the game is prioritizing a Steam release first.
BattleState Games has also explicitly stated a few months ago that a console port for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X is not being developed. However, given the game’s 1.0 release is approaching, it’s possible BattleState Games could reconsider a console port in the future, especially if demand for the title remains strong.
