Free games are always a delight, and Epic Games Store freebies hardly ever disappoint. We have already reported on one of the games expected to be available for free on the store early next month, and it appears we now have yet another.
The leaker MeguminShiro has revealed that the well-reviewed roguelike title Backpack Hero will be free on the Epic Games Store from July 3 to July 10. The game retails for $19.99 on both Steam and Epic Games, and as mentioned previously, has received a positive reception on both platforms since its arrival in 2022.
The roguelike title puts a great emphasis on inventory management, and folks who appreciate the sub-genre will most probably have a great time playing Backpack Hero. Players will take on the role of Purse, an anthropomorphic mouse who is on a mission to find her mother, meeting a multitude of foes on her way.
In order to prevail and defeat her adversaries, Purse has to draw tools from her backpack, which will keep getting upgraded in capacity through the course of the game. According to its developer, Jaspel, Backpack Hero sports over 800 items waiting to be discovered and over 100 enemies to face off with.
Moreover, the randomly generated levels and multiple play styles make the game quite a lot of fun, with the adequately engaging lore adding meaning to all of it. Ultimately, the goal is to "rebuild" Purse's hometown of Haversack Hill, according to Jaspel.
The game's reviews on Steam are "very positive", with an approval rating of 86% based on over 6,800 reviews. Critics have also praised the title, although some have also criticised certain aspects of the game, such as the city building part of the title. That said, the reviews make it clear that gamers are likely to have a lot of fun with the game.
