Elon Musk drives Tesla Model 3 owners to other EV brands ↺
It has been more than six years since the Elon Musk-led carmaker Tesla introduced the Model 3, its first more or less affordable electric car for the mass market. The electric sedan has since been overtaken in popularity by the extremely successful Model Y, and a new analysis by Bloomberg is now shedding light on why some previous Model 3 owners have decided to switch to other EV brands altogether.
Supposedly, 21.5 percent of former Tesla drivers who have sold their Model 3 and went with a different car brand did so because of their negative negative opinion on Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has apparently scared off some customers with his abundance of controversial tweets and statements. Concerns about the quality and service has been the second most cited reason for switchers. In the United States, Tesla’s customer hotline has struggled with extremely long wait times of several hours.
The article further claims that the polarizing character of Elon Musk has also had a negative impact on the overall image of the Tesla brand. One directly quoted Model 3 owner asserted that he does not want his car to be a conversation starter that inconveniently triggers discussions about the controversial CEO. It remains to be seen whether or not the South Africa-born entrepreneur, who is currently making headlines with his radical rebranding of the social network Twitter, will try to change anything about his supposedly business-inhibiting public perception.
