Version 1.49 of the Eclipse Theia development platform has been released, with 53 pull requests incorporated into the update. New features include support for dev containers, a Docker image for the Theia IDE and the so-called Dirty Diff Peek View.

Eclipse Theia is a platform for creating integrated development environments (IDE) and tools for the web and desktop. With each new version, the Theia IDE for Windows, Linux and MacOS is also released. Once a month, the open source project receives an update, this time in the form of version 1.49, and users can look forward to a whole host of new features.

A total of 53 changes have been made to Eclipse Theia 1.49, including support for development containers. The new update makes it possible to develop directly from your own Theia IDE instance on a remote device, virtual machine or in a container. When a dev container specification file is associated with a workspace, a Docker container can be selected for software development and automatically used for further work.

The associated Theia IDE is available as a desktop application, but since this integrated development environment can be used to program not only desktop but also cloud applications, there is also an online version of the Theia IDE. Thanks to a new Docker image, the Theia IDE can now be self-hosted and used via a browser. However, the Docker functionality is still considered experimental by the development team.

Version 1.49 also introduces the Dirty Diff Peek View to Eclipse Theia. This feature allows code changes to be compared directly in the editor, even if they have not yet been saved. A more comprehensive overview of the changes in Eclipse Theia 1.49 can be found in the blog post on EclipseSource.
