Dyson unveils Supersonic r with new heating element and RFID attachments
The Dyson Supersonic has received some minor improvements since its launch in 2016, but the basic design has not changed - until now. Now, Dyson has just introduced the Supersonic r, a new model that has been designed from the ground up for professional users.
This starts with the 30% smaller, 20% lighter housing - the weight of just 325 grams is intended to make operation comfortable when in use for several hours a day. The 'R'-shaped housing allows for different grip options, depending on how the device is used. To make this design possible, Dyson has developed a miniaturized motor and a new heating element that, instead of wrapping wires around a mica plate like traditional hair dryers, is designed as a curved disc made of 28 copper fibers.
This is intended to heat the air more evenly, which, in conjunction with a temperature sensor, aims to prevent damage to the hair. The different attachments are all equipped with an RFID chip, which allows the hairdryer to recognize which attachment is currently being used in order to adjust the power of the motor and the temperature accordingly.
These settings are said to have been chosen on the basis of extensive tests with experts. Professionals can adjust these presets, whereby all adjustments are saved and automatically reset the next time an attachment is used.
Price and availability
The Dyson Supersonic r is expected to launch in March, but will initially only be available for professional users. In the US, the recommended retail price is $569.99.
