Great battery life, a flicker-free display, a long update commitment, and protection against dust and splashes – there are certainly several arguments in favor of the affordable Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G (around US$ 222 at amazon.com).
You shouldn't buy the Redmi 17 5G for its camera
The camera, however, is certainly not one of them: Although on paper there is a 50-megapixel sensor with a decent f/1.8 aperture, in practice the resulting photos are very disappointing: Highlights are blown out, the images look washed out overall, and details are rendered only very roughly.
Photos: Washed out and jagged
We take a closer look at the images and find not only barely distinguishable shades of white and gray but also pronounced jagged edges on diagonal lines, because there are simply too few pixels and the lines are not smoothed by AI either.
Videos can only be recorded at 1080p and 30 fps and also look blurry and washed out in places.
Selfies from the front camera lack detail and are overexposed in places. They are usable, but you should avoid enlarging them too much or printing them out if possible.
What camera rating did the Redmi 17 5G receive?
The Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G received a camera rating of 51.5%, just barely earning a "sufficient" grade. This is not the worst rating we have awarded in the last 12 months, but it easily puts the Redmi 17 5G among the "Worst Five", meaning the five phones with the worst camera systems from the past year.
What's more: To find genuinely worse ratings, you have to go back many years. In 2019, for example, poor camera systems were still much more common in budget phones. The lowest rating for a smartphone camera also dates back to that year: The LG K20, priced at under 100 euros, managed just 34.8 %.
