Dell XPS 12

With the introduction of Windows 8, its touch-oriented interface and colourful tiles, many OEMs hastily launch laptops and tablets with touch screen to ride the wave of innovation. A new category for mobile device combines an ultrabook and a tablet and fully utilizes Windows 8’s metro UI and its traditional desktop mode to create a hybrid devices, which can both used as a tablet for casual web browsing, email checking, games, and as a work laptop.

The XPS 12 is Dell’s first step into this new territory. The XPS 12 was based on the Ultrabook XPS 13, so the case is very sturdy and keyboard and trackpad are very pleasant to use in Ultrabook mode. What sets the XPS 12 apart from the competitors is the rotating display to transform the XPS 12 to tablet mode. The XPS 12 can be comfortably used as a laptop and a tablet, albeit less so in tablet mode. Although the XPS 12 is twice as heavy as the iPad it only achieves half the battery life. It is a powerful, lightweight ultrabook, which can occasionally be used as for web browsing or checking email. If you’re primarily interested in a tablet, you should look for detachable hybrids. Overall, it is still a very interesting device, which will satisfy the needs of business customers.

Windows 8 Hybrid. Windows 8 makes it possible: the convertibles, a combination of a notebook and a tablet, are experiencing a Renaissance period. We are going to test the Dell XPS 12, which is equipped with an IPS display, and will show us if this fusion of technology can be successful.

While the i5 processor here has plenty of oomph for your typical programs, you can get the XPS 12 with a more powerful Core i7 CPU and 256GB SSD if desired. While the Dell packs a lot of punch into a tiny frame, expect to pay a premium. Our test unit retails for $1,599, but prices start at $1,299.

The Dell XPS 12 won’t match detachable laptop/tablets for their convenience or battery life due to its weight and thickness, but if you’re after a premium Ultrabook with tablet functionality built-in and don’t mind its lack of digitizer stylus, the XPS 12’s unique inner-bezel flip system works a treat looks super stylish. Throw in a Full HD IPS screen, excellent speakers, a great keyboard and flexible specs under the hood with good battery life, and this well-built machine is a recommended contender if you’re after a powerful Windows 8 convertible.

The tablet mode isn’t entirely successful, but the XPS 12 will definitely earn its keep as a powerful, lightweight Ultrabook that you can use for work on the road or in the office. The tablet mode is really just a nice bonus for when you want to have a bit of fun, or let the kids loose with apps such as FreshPaint.

The Dell XPS 12 is a solid performer with normal applications, and it can perform quite well even when faced with daunting multi-tasking. The unique flip screen form factor is complicated and probably that is the reason why nobody has attempted to imitate it. However, it does appear to be sturdy and should last long with normal usage. The bright 12.5" Full HD display is crisp and visible outdoors, and is also very responsive to touch input. It has most of the necessary ports except that there is no memory card slot or an HDMI port. A Display Port has been provided but that is not of much use, as we don't get too many display devices compatible with the same here. Providing an HDMI port or at least an adapter would have been better. While its dimensions are small, and Dell boasts of the carbon fibre body contributing to its light weight, it is not exactly as light at a little over 1.5 kg. Priced at Rs 95,000, the Dell XPS 12 is quite expensive, in fact Rs 5000 more than the Sony VAIO Duo 11, which performs a tad better. We would've have recommended Sony's device over the one from Dell, had it not come with a crammed keyboard or lacked a touchpad. We must say that most manufacturers have been pricing Windows 8 devices a little too steeply by simply adding a touchscreen as a novelty factor, when you can still use the device perfectly well with the keyboard and touchpad that it already comes with.

Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook Review
Source: Hardware Canucks English Archive.org version
With the advent of Windows 8, convertible Ultrabooks are quickly becoming the new meme for notebook manufacturers. Some provide an acceptable platform while many struggle to carve out their own niche, but one thing binds them all together: Microsoft’s new operating system. With that in mind, Windows 8 allows Dell’s XPS 12 to shine and also drags the entire user experience downhill.

A Jack of All Trades Flipscreen Ultrabook
Source: AnandTech English Archive.org version
While the XPS 12 isn’t flawless, it’s a very interesting laptop nonetheless. To my knowledge, no one else is really trying this flipscreen approach; that’s either good news or bad news, depending on why most companies take an alternative route. If they’re doing it because making a good flipscreen is too challenging, costly, and/or prone to breakage that would be bad.

The Dell XPS 12 is an excellent PC rather than a laptop - used as your main home system, it's portable, quiet and feels like a luxury experience thanks to a great display and highly usable keyboard and responsive touchscreen. The tablet mode works but it's one of the heaviest tablets in the world so only suitable for sofa or desk use. Even without the tablet skill set, it's an admirable and powerful machine tied to the home.

The XPS 12's various problems are a shame as it does have other things going for it. The backlit keyboard is one of the best we've used - the large and responsive keys make typing a pleasure. The carbon fibre construction feels very robust. The XPS 12 is also fast. The dual core 1.9GHz Core i7 processor, 8GB of memory and the 256GB SSD make this a very fast computer.

We went into this review a little annoyed that Dell were pushing a 1.5KG tablet but considering the quality and value using the XPS 12 purely as an Ultrabook we’re happy to say that if you want a high-quality Ultrabook and you can cope with the ports and battery life, the Dell XPS 12 delivers a great Ultrabook experience and offers you some occasional tablet-mode fun too. It’s incredibly well put together both in terms of electronic design and industrial design. The only question that remains is – can you afford it?

Dell has carried out the same excellence from the XPS 14 as far as design and build is concerned, with the Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook. The display flip is a very unique feature to have. Performance is fairly acceptable, but the cherry on the cake is the battery life. But like most of these convertibles, they work better as laptops than as tablets. None of that takes away from the fact that you are paying a premium for the entire package because of the form factor.

The Dell XPS 12 gets plenty right – it’s pretty, powerful and the Full HD display is excellent. However, despite all the hallmarks of an excellent Ultrabook, and tablet functions that work well, we can’t help fretting about the lifespan of those dainty little display hinges. The Dell XPS 12 is a good compromise between a tablet and an ultrabook, although it excels at being neither. But while a 12.5-inch screen and a weight of 1.54kg might be fine for an Ultrabook, they’re a distinct liability in a tablet. You can’t hold the XPS 12 in one hand, which means that you have to prop it up on your knees or on a table in order to use it properly. Ultimately, this tablet mode isn’t intended for work―it’s for those off-duty moments when you can put your feet up and browse the Web or watch a few films.

There's no doubt some tweaks need to be made to the XPS 12 convertible's system in order to provide a smoother user experience under Windows 8, but the physical unit itself is great. It's a lot of fun to use, its screen is excellent, and it works very well as a tablet. The inclusion of a Core i7 CPU means it's one of the quickest tablet devices on the Australian market, too, and you can use it for serious work as a conventional notebook, in addition to tablet-centric tasks. Basically, you're getting a versatile system that's practical and well made, but it needs some software updates to iron out a few wrinkles before it will provide a completely pain-free user experience.

The XPS 12 Convertible Touch Ultrabook is a clever and stylish design, and it obviates the need to carry a tablet with you. At least if a Windows 8 tablet is what you want. However, we did experience some problems with the wireless service in Windows 8, as well as a few other niggles, which we hope are only present on our test model.

Dell knocked it out of the park with its first Windows 8 convertible. The thin, light, and carbon-fiber-clad chassis make the hybrid a great option for on-the-go students and business types, especially when you factor the machine's all-day battery life into the equation. Few ultrabooks can match the XPS 12's keyboard, while few Windows laptops, period, sport such an impressive touch pad.

Where the Sony VAIO Duo 11 left us nervous about the future of the hybrid ultrabook, the Dell XPS 12 puts us back on solid ground. While the design is a better laptop than a tablet, the XPS 12 is a solid performer, thanks to ultrabook-grade specs, long battery life, and a design than prioritizes comfort and usability. It's a bit early to be picking favorites, but the Dell XPS 12 is a front runner in the nascent hybrid category.

As a laptop, I have no real complaint with the XPS 12. But, tragically, it’s largely unusable as a tablet. This is a real problem given the $1,200 starting price tag. In a world of $800 ultrabooks with similar configurations, you’re paying a hefty markup for a really, really nice touchscreen. That’s a tough sell, no matter how pretty it is to look at.

If you're one of the few who remember the original Dell Inspiron Duo from 2010, pat yourself on the back. Like that Duo, the new XPS 12 has a screen that swivels at the middle of the lid's sides, so it can rotate 180 degrees along its horizontal axis and end up facing out from the back of the lid's frame.Dell has revamped its rotating Duo laptop concept into the much-improved XPS 12, but like most convertibles, it makes a better laptop than tablet.

Dell XPS 12 review: with the launch of Windows 8, 'convertible' takes on a new meaning
Source: Engadget English Archive.org version
Though the XPS 12's size and weight make it a bit unwieldy as a substitute tablet, it's still a compelling option if you're in the market for a high-end, touch-enabled Ultrabook. The XPS 12 is almost as light as other Ultrabooks, with a premium industrial design, comfortable keyboard, gorgeous 1080p screen and a super-fast boot-up time.

What at first might seem like a gimmick seems to be something of a double-edged sword. In fact, it's not a gimmick, the rotating screen has some very real uses, and even as a tablet it's perfectly usable, if a little heavy. And, if the price for the i7 is just too steep, then consider the i5 with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, it starts at £999, and is more than powerful enough for most people. For the best value, an extra £150 gets you a 256GB SSD and 8GB of ram with the i5.

Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook Review

Overall, the XPS 12 performed well in our benchmark tests. It earned the top spot in the PCMark benchmark which measures a system's overall performance and responsiveness. In real-world usage, the system performed well and felt very quick overall. Battery life is a bit of a disappointment with the XPS 12, however. Since the battery is not user replaceable, don’t expect to get a full day's worth of work from the machine without a nearby power source.

With a starting price of Rs 94,990, the XPS 12 is one expensive notebook, even for an Ultrabook. While it does have a very good feature set, behind the fancy new rotating screen, it’s a very average performing notebook. The hybrid nature of the device is fun to use, but we’re sure that the novelty will wear off after a while. The Windows 8 store has still a long way to go in terms of Windows apps and until that happens, traditional desktop applications will still rule—and you don’t need a fancy touchscreen to use them.

The Dell XPS 12 brings the full Windows 8 experience to the table thanks to its convertible tablet form factor. Dell's screen flipping mechanism is as unique as it is rock solid; it turns into a great tablet in a matter of seconds. The 12.5-inch display is absolutely beautiful and the touch screen functionality works perfectly in Windows 8. The screen's full HD resolution (1920x1080) has tons of space to use two windows side by side or look at high-res pictures and video in exquisite detail. And if you don't want to use the tablet mode, the XPS 12's backlit keyboard and clickpad are fantastic.

Dell XPS 12-9Q33

Dell has been in the forefront of laptop/tablet hybrids since 2012. The Dell XPS 12-9Q33 is the latest model in this line. Flip the screen, close the lid, and it becomes a tablet. With all those moving parts, Dell has built it sturdily as well as beautifully with black carbon fiber and aluminum. A soft touch finish on the lid and the bottom gives it good look and great grip in tablet mode. Once the novelty of flipping the screen around has passed, the 1920 x 1080 screen will still please with its vivid colors and great details resolution. The backlit keyboard is equally well designed and great to use, with slight depressions in the keys improve the accuracy.

One of the biggest downsides of this great device is the lack of an SD card slot. It is also a little on the heavy side for a tablet, weighing in at 1,4 kg, while the weight is decent for a laptop. Graphics are driven by Intel's integrated HD 4400 GPU, which makes it only suitable for casual or mainstream games on lower settings. The downsides end here. The performance of the Dell XPS 12-9Q33 is strong, powered by Intel's fourth-generation 1.6-GHz Core i5-4200U. As most Dell products, there are optional more powerful specs that will increase the price. The Dell XPS 12-9Q33 also shines when it comes to battery life with above 9 hours during web browsing via WiFi. It is hard to find a better tablet/laptop hybrid out there right now. The Dell XPS 12-9Q33 is easily the best in this category.

All's well that's Haswell. The critically-acclaimed Dell XPS 12 returns with a nearly-identical form factor but an upgraded chipset and battery. With these improvements under its belt coupled with a $1,200 price tag, can it hope to hang with the best?

Source: Kitguru English Archive.org version
Overall we are very impressed with the Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook. In terms of the design and functionality, it is actually quite unique. Dell have clearly pulled out all the stops in terms of the design of the XPS 12. The screen mechanism is very innovative and the quality of the materials used in construction are some of the best we have seen from a Dell machine. Even though the XPS 12 is a compact notebook, Dell have still managed to shoe-horn in an Intel i7-4500U processor – a fairly potent low voltage design. We are impressed with its performance in this system, even without a dedicated graphics card. It should provide more than enough power for the majority of users.

The XPS 12 isn’t all roses as its port offerings feel a bit lacking as well as its overall spongy keyboard, which we know is more of a personal preference. Its weight could also cause some concern if you plan on using the XPS 12 as a tablet more often than an ultrabook as tablets are known to be ultraportable mobile devices. The XPS 12 would be better suited to someone who wants an ultrabook who also wants the option of being able to use their notebook as a tablet every so often when they just want to do some couch surfing. If you’re looking for a Windows 8 tablet that can sometimes be used as an ultrabook, then you may want to take a look at the Microsoft Surface.

70% Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook review: Haswell refresh adds performance
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
The XPS 12 has just two USB 3.0 ports, one of which is always on for charging devices such as a smartphone or a digital media player. A headset jack and a built-in dual-array mic sit next to the webcam for videoconferencing. The machine has no hardwired ethernet, but this is one of the few laptops we’ve seen to boast an integrated 802.11ac adapter (Intel’s dual-band Wireless-AC 7260, which also supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Intel’s wireless display technology).

Shoving a fourth-gen Intel Core processor into the XPS 12 greatly improved battery life and integrated graphics performance. The result is a convertible that can handle many tasks, but also break records for battery life. More than 13 hours in the light-load test is outstanding; even some Android tablets don’t last that long.

Dell's XPS 12 is a dual-purpose Ultrabook that performs very well as a tablet (albeit a heavy one). It build on last year's model by adding a fourth-generation Intel Core i7 CPU, and this has improved its battery life dramatically. However, it has a few issues that need sorting out before it can be considered one of the best convertible Ultrabooks on the market.

If you’re looking for a lightweight tablet then look elsewhere. The Dell XPS 12 is primarily intended as a powerful working laptop, and its fourth-generation Haswell processor provides performance and battery life that could justify its high price. The tablet mode isn’t entirely successful, but it’s a nice little bonus that you can use to relax when you finish work at the end of the day.

Compared to the competition, the Dell XPS 12 is much improved due to its 4th gen Intel Core processor. It's unique in the convertible ultrabook space, since it's the only one that flips its screen along its equator instead of a flipping or rotating hinge. The XPS 12 now lasts almost eight and a half hours on our battery test, which means you should be able to get a full workday out of the system before you need to find a plug. It's the kind of system you'd have to have some hands on time with if you're considering a purchase. Switching the screen over might come naturally to you, or it may ruin your day with a bout of frustration.

Although you can pick small faults with the XPS 12, it’s a hybrid that oozes quality. Like the best of its ilk, it provides a workable halfway house between a compact Ultrabook and a chunky tablet. We still wonder how long the ingenious hinge mechanism will last under everyday abuse, but with soaring battery life and a truly gorgeous design, the Dell XPS 12 is better than ever.

Has anyone completely nailed the hybrid middle ground between laptop and tablet? I wouldn't say so, but Dell's flip-screen XPS 12 at least makes for a more solid laptop than most of the detachable-screen models we've seen. The carbon fiber body gives it an upscale feel, and the new Intel CPUs take care of our main issue with its predecessor, battery life.

Dell XPS 12 Two-in-One Laptop Review
Source: Slashgear English Archive.org version
By far, though, the most impressive part was the quality of the display and the stylus. To say that drawing and writing on the XPS 12 was a pleasure is a complete understatement. The tablet provided one of the best digital drawing experiences I've ever had with a consumer tablet; this could absolutely be a digital artist's main drawing tablet, and I can't imagine they'd find a single thing to complain about. If you frequently take handwritten notes, as well, you'll love the XPS 12.

40% Review: Dell's XPS 12 is all over the shop
Source: PC Authority English Archive.org version
The killer blow for the XPS 12, though, is the sheer quality of the competition. If you have anywhere between $1,300 and $2,000 to spend then there are many other devices more worthy of your cash. Given that you can pick up the Core m3-powered Surface Pro 4 with the Type Cover for $1,549, I fear the XPS 12 is dead in the water. Sorry, Dell, but this time it’s back to the drawing board.

Dell: Dell is a U.S. manufacturer (based in Texas) of computer hardware founded in 1984 and is one of the largest international manufacturers in terms of both market share and notebook models. Its product line includes desktops, notebooks, storage systems, monitors, servers, printers, consumer electronics and peripherals. Dell offers laptops that are suitable for various applications, such as business laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables and workstations. Dell's business laptops from the Latitude and Precision series are an option for professional users and businesses.

In 2023, Dell had an approximate 17% market share of global PC sales, ranking #3 after Lenovo and HP.

For gaming enthusiasts, Dell's Alienware brand is for gaming notebooks.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

Intel HD Graphics 4400:

ULV integrated GPU (GT2) with 20 EUs found on certain Haswell CPU models.

Intel HD Graphics 515: Integrated GPU (GT2) with 24 EUs found on Core-m-CPUs of the Skylake generation (4,5 W TDP).

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

3667U: Fastest Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 2.0 - 3.2 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

Intel Core i5:

3427U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.8 - 2.8 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

4200U:

Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 2.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Core m5:

6Y57: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for tablets and 2-in-1 notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 515 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
