D-Link launches small and affordable DIS-100E industrial switch

Anyone looking for a rugged switch that is not too expensive could consider D-Link's DIS-100E-05. However, there is a caveat: The new device is only a Fast Ethernet switch, which is anything but fast by today's standards. This means the five RJ45 ports are limited to 100 Mbps.
In return, the switch is very small at 3.9 x 3.0 x 1.2 inches and has an operating temperature range of -40 to 167°F. It can therefore be used in harsh environments. D-Link also specifies surge protection of up to 6 kV for each Ethernet port. There is even power redundancy, as the switch has both a barrel connector and a voltage-flexible terminal block. The latter accepts 12 to 55 volts from two power sources. Maximum power consumption is 1.45 watts, and the switch does not have a fan. To keep power consumption low during operation, the switch also supports energy-efficient Ethernet according to IEEE 802.3az.
D-Link also states that the housing is IP40-rated. It is therefore somewhat protected against dirt, but not against dust or water. Outdoor installation is therefore not permitted. D-Link also lists hardening against EMI interference.
The switch is an unmanaged switch, so there are no configuration options. According to D-Link, the switch can also be installed on a DIN rail. More information can be found in the PDF data sheet for the new switch. The switch doesn't appear to be widely available in the US just yet but can already be found at certain European retailers.
