Compact OM Pen camera said to launch Wednesday with brand-new kit lens
OM System officially confirmed last week that the next camera in the Olympus Pen series will be unveiled on Wednesday, September 9. According to 43rumors, the announcement will take place at 07:00 a.m. BST, which is just a few hours before the launch of the Apple iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra on the same day.
The latest rumors suggest that OM System will launch the camera alongside a brand-new kit zoom lens – specifically, a successor to the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 14 – 42 mm f/3.5 – 5.6 II ($297 on Amazon). The focal length remains unchanged, corresponding to a 35mm equivalent of 28 – 84 mm.
Judging by the official teaser video, the design and size won’t change significantly, so the kit zoom lens won’t be nearly as compact as the older Olympus EZ version. It is not yet known how the new lens differs from the older version. The OM Pen is expected to hit the market with a kit lens for around $1,000.
Technically, the camera is reportedly based on the Olympus Pen E-P7, but with two significant changes. First, OM System is replacing the flash with a built-in electronic viewfinder. And second, it uses the more modern, partially stacked sensor already seen in the OM System OM-3. However, the Micro Four Thirds sensor still offers a resolution of 20 megapixels, as before. The new OM Pen is reportedly weather-sealed and equipped with a flip-out display.
