OpenAI is officially rolling out GPT-5.1, as revealed on the company's official website. This latest iteration in its GPT-5 model series is set to deliver better reasoning, improved instruction-following, and a more natural conversational experience. Available right now for ChatGPT users, GPT-5.1, according to the AI giant, marks a major step forward in bridging raw intelligence with ease of use.
Two new models
GPT-5.1 arrives in two variants, each tailored to different user needs:
GPT-5.1 Instant: Optimized for everyday interactions, this model responds rapidly while offering a warmer, more conversational tone and closer adherence to user instructions.
GPT-5.1 Thinking: Built for more demanding tasks, this version dynamically adjusts its reasoning time—faster on simple queries, more deliberate on complex problems—and delivers clearer, simpler explanations. OpenAI stated that both models reflect a unified update to the GPT-5 family. A built-in router determines which model is best suited to each prompt, enabling smoother transitions between quick responses and deep thinking.
Conversation that feels more human
“Great AI should not only be smart but also enjoyable to talk to,” the company said in its announcement. With GPT-5.1, users will notice fewer robotic responses and more natural communication.
Among the enhancements:
Enhanced tone presets: Users can now select from Default, Friendly, Efficient, Professional, Candid, or Quirky settings—or fine-tune tone, emoji use, and conciseness directly.
Better instruction-following: GPT-5.1 improves on prior versions by handling user instructions—such as word-count limits or format requirements—more reliably. Adaptive reasoning: The model gauges prompt complexity and devotes more reasoning time when needed or moves faster when the task is simple.
Initial benchmarks released by OpenAI suggest statistically higher scores in reasoning and coding tasks for GPT-5.1, thanks in part to its new “adaptive reasoning” architecture.
Rollout schedules & legacy support
OpenAI is launching GPT-5.1 first to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, Go, Business, and Edu users. Free and logged-out users will gain access in the coming days. Legacy GPT-5 models will remain available via the “Legacy Models” menu for three months, giving users time to transition smoothly. API access for GPT-5.1 (e.g., gpt-5.1-chat-latest [Instant] and gpt-5.1 [Thinking]) will follow later this week.
A course correction after GPT-5’s mediocre reception
GPT-5.1 arrives amid waning excitement around GPT-5, which many users found overly rigid and less personable than expected. With this launch, OpenAI is signaling a renewed focus on communication experience, not just raw capability.
“Today’s GPT-5.1 update is a step toward a ChatGPT that fits you—smarter, more enjoyable to talk to, and adaptable to your preferences,” as stated by the company.
What this means for developers and enterprises
For business and technical users, GPT-5.1 offers:
Faster, more dependable reasoning on complex queries.
Increased customization and tone control for deployment in customer-facing applications. Continued support for legacy models, easing the migration path.
OpenAI emphasizes that even though the model is more capable, responsible usage safeguards remain a top priority.
