Speculation about Pragmata has finally been laid to rest as Capcom has decided to directly address rumors about the title essentially being a replacement or placeholder for a Mega Man title.

Capcom has cleared the air on fan theories circulating online about its long-delayed sci-fi game, Pragmata, which is theorized to be a spiritual revival of the Mega Man franchise. The company stated that Pragmata is a completely new IP from Capcom and bears no ties to the Mega Man series.

In a recent interview with VGC, Pragmata producer Naoto Oyama addressed fan theories and debunked them on the spot, stating, “Pragmata is not a Mega Man game.” Oyama further laughed at the fan theories and added, “It’s a completely new game from Capcom.”

These fan theories could be tied to the fact that Oyama served as one of the producers on the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection. He did express happiness at the speculated crossover, commenting, “I’m happy to see that people who love Mega Man are passionate about Pragmata too. From my standpoint, it’s nice to see people are being positive about it.”

Another reason these theories gained traction is that the robotic girl Diana bears a slight resemblance to Mega Man, particularly in the game’s setting, a moonbase overrun by machines infected by a virus. This seems like a classic Mega Man trope.

Despite the debunking, Capcom has assured fans that it will remain committed to the Mega Man series. The company earlier stated that it holds the franchise in high regard and is brainstorming ideas to bring back Mega Man to the modern age.

The Blue Bomber graced our screens in his last entry, Mega Man 11, in 2018, which followed an eight-year hiatus after 2010’s Mega Man 10. However, the series has still seen a few retro compilations in recent years to keep fans engaged.

Pragmata, on the other hand, is a new IP from Capcom. The company first unveiled the game in June 2020, but unfortunately, it has been marred by multiple delays, shifting its original targets in 2022 and 2023 to its newest release window of 2026 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.

A recent hands-on demo from Pragmata was showcased at Gamescom 2025, which has given the gaming community a bit of insight into Pragmata’s gameplay. The game features protagonist Hugh Williams and Diana, who engage in battles requiring players to solve grid-based puzzles while hacking enemies, quick-swapping weapons, and taking them offline.

Speculation suggests that Pragmata will pop up in Capcom’s upcoming lineup at the Tokyo Game Show 2025, scheduled from September 25 to 28, where attendees can get more details on the sci-fi game, along with other titles like Resident Evil Requiem and Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
