A purchase of a high-end RTX 5090 graphics card via Amazon India resulted in the delivery of a packet of detergent. Despite clear weight discrepancy and video evidence, Amazon denied the refund, highlighting a growing trend of graphics card retail fraud on major e-commerce platforms.

Reddit user void_SW has shared a story about an RTX 5090 scam as experienced by his friend Harsh Raj. According to the post, Raj ordered a 32 GB RTX 5090 Windforce OC via Amazon's Fulfilled by Amazon service. Upon opening the sealed package, which was delivered on March 14, they discovered a tampered manufacturer seal, a fake aftermarket barcode, and a one-kilogram packet of Ghari detergent inside the hardware box.

As anyone would expect, they tried to get a refund from Amazon but with no luck. Despite providing raw unboxing footage and noting that the 1.56 kg shipping weight on the label perfectly closely matched the detergent rather than the standard 2.5 to 3 kg weight of the actual graphics card, Amazon's customer relations team denied the refund claim following an eight-day investigation.

Response from Amazon India

This incident occurs against the backdrop of a broader crisis in the technology market. An ongoing global memory shortage has severely limited the production of top-tier graphics processing units (GPUs) like the RTX 5090, leading to significant price hikes and widespread product scarcity. Scammers are actively exploiting this high-demand, low-supply environment.

The compromised seller in this case, listed as "Fab World Point," has reportedly scammed multiple buyers in the same week, with Amazon's own platform reviews showing other customers receiving detergent instead of a GPU. The GPU in question cost 299,995 rupees (about $3,200).

Reddit users expressed sheer disbelief at the audacity of the situation, urging the duo to pursue legal action in consumer court and call out Amazon on social media. The friends have also taken to X and LinkedIn in an attempt to get justice.
