Bluesky says it won't train AI on user content
Bluesky, the X (formerly Twitter) social media alternative, has announced that it won't train its AI model on user content. The announcement was made the same day X's updated terms and conditions took effect.
Last month, X announced several changes to its general terms and conditions. The new terms allow the platform to pass customer data on to third parties, who can use it for targeted advertising and training AI models.
X's updated terms included heavy fines for external data miners - automated tools that collect user data. The platform said if an account is caught viewing 1 million posts in 24 hours, it will be fined $15,000.
Bluesky said it will "not use any of your content to train generative AI, and have no intention of doing so." This does not stop external crawlers (tools that index websites) from gathering data.
"Just as robots.txt files don’t always prevent outside companies from crawling those sites, the same applies here. That said, we’d like to do our part to ensure that outside orgs respect user consent and are actively discussing within the team on how to achieve this.” Emily Liu, Bluesky spokesperson, told The Verge.
