As the exodus from X continues, the Bluesky user count recently soared past 25 million members. With more posters comes demand for features already available on other social media platforms. The decentralized app now offers a dedicated video tab that collects media a user has shared. Bluesky's official account posted the news, which includes some other new quality-of-life features.
Bluesky first added the ability to upload videos in September 2024. Earlier this month, the brief U.S. TikTok outage prompted the network to introduce a vertical video feed. The video tab is another sign of an evolving social media platform that encourages more impactful posts.
When a social media network announces new capabilities, users often take the opportunity to request other features. Still in its early stages, Bluesky didn't open public registrations until February 2024. Posters regularly ask for the ability to edit posts, something X requires a premium subscription to achieve. While no ETA exists on editing, Bluesky has made it easier to block users after they send offensive DMs. The 1.97 update also includes more comprehensive translations.
Bluesky was conceived of by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in 2019. Not surprisingly, its interface seems familiar to X posters. However, Bluesky's open-source AT protocol allows members to personalize feeds with intelligent filters. Even if text and photos still dominate the platform, videos are quickly becoming integral to suggested content.
Already facing economic struggles, X is losing more revenue as Elon Musk becomes increasingly involved in politics. Bluesky has plenty of other competition, like Meta's Threads, but its future looks brighter than it has at any point.
