Mewgenics finally has a release date, nearly 13 years after its original announcement, as fans of Edmund McMillen get to play the title next year, with the developer stating the added time allows him to deliver a more polished and well-tested experience.

After more than a decade’s wait from the creator of The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy, the odd cat-breeding roguelike RPG from Edmund McMillen, Mewgenics, has finally received a release date of February 10, 2026, for PC via Steam.

McMillen announced the game’s release date on September 4, 2025, and this reveal comes nearly 13 years after the game’s initial announcement in 2012, making it one of the longest development cycles for an indie game.

McMillen, alongside co-developer Tyler Glaiel, celebrated the long-awaited reveal with a 50-minute gameplay session on the Edmund McMillen YouTube channel, giving players a deeper look at Mewgenics' turn-based combat, cat-breeding system, and grotesque yet ultimately charming vibe.

According to McMillen, Mewgenics is “the strangest project I’ve ever worked on.” Considering the 13-year cycle, Mewgenics development has been pretty rocky. Team Meat first announced the game as a follow-up to Super Meat Boy, calling it an amalgam of Pokémon, The Sims, and Animal Crossing.

However, priorities shifted, and McMillen started development on The Legend of Bum-bo. Later in 2018, McMillen reacquired the rights from Team Meat and restarted development on Mewgenics with Glaiel. The game now features over 200 hours of gameplay, more than 800 unique items, over 200 enemies, and a pool of more than 1,200 abilities.

Mewgenics was initially slated for a 2025 release but was later pushed to 2026 amid a strategic shift, with McMillen explaining on Steam:

“Launching in November or December is very complicated. We want the game to get the attention it deserves and not compete with AAA holiday releases. Plus, a few extra months allow us to deliver a more polished and well-tested experience.”

One of the biggest competitors in the indie scene is Hollow Knight: Silksong, which has already crashed digital store pages due to an influx of gamers trying to purchase the game.

Anticipation for Mewgenics is at an all-time high, given Edmund McMillen’s track record with The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which has an Overwhelmingly Positive user score of 96.23% on Steam out of 354,162 user reviews.

According to VGChartz, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth has shipped almost 10 million units worldwide as of July 1st, 2018, and has a consistent daily concurrent player count of 25,000 players on Steam.
