Back when it launched in 2023, Baldur's Gate 3 bedazzled fans and critics alike. It got perfect scores from multiple outlets and went on to win the Game of the Year award later that year. It had an all-time peak of 875,343 players and even two years after launch it regularly pulls over 80,000 players per day.
Baldur's Gate 3 is based in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, and anyone familiar with the franchise will feel right at home. Your first playthrough can be a bit overwhelming because the character creator throws an overwhelming number of classes/subclasses/races at you. And the game only gets more complex once you start playing.
If it gets overwhelming, there are plenty of beginner's guides online, but we'd recommend you go in blind. After all, you get to experience a game for the first time only once. In Baldur's Gate 3, your character starts out in a crashing spaceship. As you attempt to escape, you meet different companions who will accompany you for the rest of your journey.
Upon exit, you're thrown into a vast open world, free to explore at your leisure. The campaign is broadly divided into three acts. Like every good RPG out there, actions have consequences, often far-reaching ones that lock you out/open up labyrinthine questlines. And that's precisely why Baldur's Gate 3 is held in such a high regard. Player choice is tantamount, and the degree of freedom offered is seldom found in other games, even classic Bethesda ones.
Experiencing everything Baldur's Gate 3 has to offer will easily take you hundreds of hours. Howlongtobeat says the main story alone will take up 71 hours, and a completionist run will take twice as longer. A recent update added support for third-party mods. That, combined with the already gargantuan game, will ensure you never run out of content.
And the best part: the game has zero microtransactions or paid DLC. Baldur's Gate 3 Digital Deluxe offers a handful of cosmetics, but that's about it. You can play solo or squad up with your friends. Or if you have someone over, split-screen co-op is also an option. Lastly, if you on the move, it even runs pretty well on the Steam Deck.
Baldur's Gate 3 has received a 20% discount on Steam, bringing its price down to $48. SteamDB confirms this is the lowest it has dropped to in recent history.
