Atom-powered Chuwi Lapbook 12.3 now available for $299 USD for a limited time
June 21, 2017 update: Online retailer Gearbest is hosting another sale on the Chuwi Lapbook for $299 compared to the suggested MSRP of $349. A previous promotion dropped the price to $319, but a new promo code (Chuwi123) will bring the price down even further.
Chinese manufacturer Chuwi has been on a roll lately with new notebook and convertible announcements targeting the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book markets. The previously reported Lapbook 12.3 notebook will now officially launch before the end of this month for under $350 USD through online retailers.
Core specifications include:
- Intel Celeron N3450 Apollo Lake CPU
- 2736 x 1824 resolution 3:2 display
- 6 GB RAM
- 64 GB eMMC + M.2 2242 slot for secondary storage + MicroSD slot
- USB 3.0, USB 2.0, mini-HDMI
- Dual-band WLAN + Bluetooth 4.2
- 37 Wh internal battery
- Windows 10 or Linux Ubuntu
- 30.0 x 22.3 x 1.67 cm
- 1.4 kg
The passively-cooled Chuwi Lapbook is notable for its full aluminum chassis, uncommon M.2 2242 secondary storage, and its 3:2 display ratio. The taller display in particular makes the Lapbook a good solution for word processing, web browsing, and presentations compared to standard 16:9 alternatives as web pages and word documents benefit more from the squarer aspect ratio. We suspect that the Achilles heel of the Lapbook will be its slow Celeron N3450 CPU as this is a processor typically reserved for low-power netbooks and mini PCs.
