Asus has seen motherboard market share hit as high as 45 percent in 2017
Asus has been a significant player in the branded motherboard market for many years now, but their market share has grown dramatically in the last few years. In 2012, the two largest motherboard manufacturers (Asus and Gigabyte) had a combined market share of 45 to 47 percent. Now for parts of 2017 Asus has seen their market share of branded motherboards hit as high as 45 percent.
Industry sources claim that a large part of this growth can be attributed to Asus’s dominance of the high-end and gaming markets with their X299 and Z270 [and presumably AMD’s X399] motherboards in the ROG, Prime, and TUF sub-brands.
Asus had already been the market leader in the major markets of the United States, Europe, Japan, and India, as well as the minor markets of Australia and New Zealand. But recently they have had a lot of success in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. In the Asia-Pacific region, Asus has over 70 percent of the X299 market and up to 60 percent in the Z270 gaming market.
Despite this strong performance in the motherboard market, especially in the larger margin high-end and gaming segments, Asus reported their worst quarterly profit since 2010 for the 2nd quarter of 2017.
