Asus' latest ScreenPad Plus makes the Apple Touch Bar look like child's play. The unlocked Core i9 CPU, GeForce RTX graphics, 1 TB Samsung SSD, and soldered 32 GB of RAM are hefty specifications that come with an equally hefty chassis and price.

The Asus ZenBook Pro Duo is an interesting spin on the classic laptop design, with two 4K screens and a huge amount of firepower built into its body. However, it feels like there are a few too many compromises made to house the second screen – known as the Screenpad Plus. It’s expensive, bulky and the Screenpad Plus doesn’t quite justify those compromises. A shame.

The Asus ZenBook Pro Duo's 4K OLED screen is superb, the keyboard as good as any put into a laptop, the trackpad almost confusingly usable, and we'd never say no to a RTX 2060 graphics card. We're even charmed by the ScreenPad Plus, much more so than the second-screen models that Asus has slipped under some of its trackpads in other models (such as the ZenBook 14). However, start prodding at the second screen feature to see what it can really do and it will often start falling apart at the seams. Which is a shame, as when it's good it's really, genuinely usable. All in all, the enBook Pro Duo meanders between the sublime and ridiculous. And we rather love it for that.

In summary then, though the ZenBook Pro Duo is pricey, it offers superlative specs and its ScreenPad Plus offers a unique experience that you can’t find on any other notebook in the market today. It’s up to users to determine if it’s something that will really benefit themselves, but it’s hard to argue that the ZenBook Pro Duo doesn’t offer something special and at a pretty reasonable price too.

Overall, this is not a device I can recommend for everyone because this is not a device for everyone. But for the very creative among us, especially those in the Microsoft universe, this is a dream device. Yes, it is pricey, but the bump you will get in productivity will balance out the costs in a while. But this is also not a perfect device, as many innovative devices tend to be. But that is the risk you will take as a first mover.

Whether its the smartphone or the laptop, more screens are the future. And with the ZenBook Pro Duo, Asus has tried to make use of the existing resources to bring more screen dream to consumers in the present. With the addition of a small display, there's a lot that you can do with your laptop and once you get used to it, it becomes difficult to go back to any conventional laptop.

But the ZenBook Pro Duo did sell me on the idea of a second display on a laptop, even if it doesn’t quite manage the execution just yet. It’s a first-generation product of a radical new way to use a computer — so of course Asus doesn’t have all of the pieces solved just yet. Presumably, the next generation of the ZenBook Pro Duo will improve, as will other dual-display laptops with different screen sizes and form factors over time. There is a great laptop buried within the raw clay of the ZenBook Pro Duo. Hopefully, Asus (or another company) will take the time and effort to find it.

You will recall the big thing from ASUS in 2018 was the ScreenPad – a combination touchpad and FullHD display. You could set it up as a numeric keypad, run videos in it and so on. This year the ScreenPad 2 added functionality, was easily editable (like a smart phone) and has been included in models across the ASUS range from the relatively affordable Asus VivoBook S15 (Model, S532, prices starting at $1,399) to the Asus ZenBook Edition 30 (model UX334, priced at $2,799) with its hand stitched pearl white Italian leather finish.

The ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo is undoubtedly impressive. As mentioned, it’s not that common to see a laptop that’s equipped with two screens and have programs run on both of them. The hardware included is decent, and ASUS also gives users more than enough RAM to go to town and multi-task however they want. This device is definitely meant for creators and streamers who are into games.

The concept of multi-monitor laptops isn’t new but done the way ASUS has done for the ZenBook Pro Duo, they definitively set a incredibly high-standard for usability. Still, this usability may vary on what kind of user you are. ASUS has marketed heavily for multimedia professionals like video editors, music products and heavy office users and to some extent, gamers. For the most part, all those listed will benefit greatly from the increase in real estate if their workflow already integrates these things and their level of expertise can utilize the screen greatly. That being said, the ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo isn’t ready-to-go, plug-n-play kind of solution and requires a certain level of familiarity with their workflow that would justify the increased cost of the screen, otherwise an ROG laptop would easily surpass the ZenBook Pro Duo in specs and performance.

We wouldn't say that there are a plethora of cutting-edge dual screen and OLED laptops, but their numbers are growing slowly. The 15-inch Asus ZenBook Pro Duo is the first to put them together in the same laptop, making it a potential photo-editing powerhouse and a workhorse in cramped spaces-- if you don't mind the weight and don't need good battery life.

For the money, you can get the $2,649 Dell XPS 15, which has a brighter, more vivid display, better overall performance and longer battery life. However, its GTX 1650 GPU is no match for the Duo's RTX 2060 GPU. And you lose out on that sweet second display. Overall, the ZenBook Pro Duo is a serious contender for creative and mobile professionals looking for a worthy alternative to Apple.

ASUS was bold to integrate a second display to a notebook computer to change the way we look at what notebook computers are today. However, the design and execution of the ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo have a lot to improve. It’s a great innovative step forward, but several small steps back. It would have been better if they focused more on the basics of what a notebook computer should be.

Furthermore, while the overall design is very similar, there is no digital number pad here, nor is there a dedicated Turbo Fan button, likely owing to the less demanding specifications. The ZenBook Duo will feature the latest Core i7 chip and an NVIDIA GeForce MX250, which should be a lot easier to cool than a ZenBook Pro Duo configured with the highest specifications.

Some months after the availability of the ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo we’ll also see the ASUS Zenbook Duo (UX481). This follows the same overall scheme, but the main display (this one is non-OLED) has a 14 inch diagonal and offers full HD resolution (1,920 by 1,080 pixels) rather than UltraHD. No price has yet been set for this model.

If you're a multi-monitor addict who's fed up of feeling constrained by your laptop's paltry single screen, then the Pro Duo could be pretty tempting - not least since it packs more than enough power for just about anything you'd care to throw at it. On the other hand, if your typical multi-tasking is limited to a few browser tabs and a music app, there's really no need to put up with the compromises that the Pro Duo necessitates.

If you’re willing to settle for slightly lower hardware and can’t handle the sheer size of the 15.6-inch model, you can opt for the ultra-book version of the device, dubbed the ZenBook Duo. The display panel gets downgraded to a 14-inch, full HD IPS panel, with the ScreenPad Plus shrinking down from 14-inches to just 12.6-inches. Intel’s Core i7 chip powers this particular notebook, with RAM topping out at 16GB. 1TB of PCIe SSD storage can still be had, though the GPU gets downgraded to NVIDIA’s GeForce MX250.

During our brief time with the Duo series we felt like the idea has some potential but that its second screen’s placement makes it a bit awkward to use. To help somewhat combat its unique positioning Asus did angle the bottom part of the laptop, which also helps with airflow. Nonetheless, the Zenbook’s dual-screen approach is less ideal than side-by-side monitors but we do applaud Asus trying something new. For what it’s worth, we like this approach better than Asus’ standard Screenpad.

Asus has once again made another revolutionary statement through the official release of the ZenBook Pro Duo UX581GV. The worldwide audience is bound to be amazed by its extraordinary design, as this particular laptop model features a secondary screen which is responsive to touch and subsequently facilitates a smoother workflow with a guaranteed increase in productivity. First of all, one would notice that the ZenBook Pro Duo’s primary screen display only measures up to 15.6 inch wide, which in itself is a common measurement standard for premium laptops to leave any significant mark in the industry. However, do not be fooled by the common standardization of the device – the ZenBook Pro Duo boasts an astounding 3,840 x 2,160 screen resolution on a 4K UHD main display. This specification alone puts almost all of the laptops in the selfsame industry into great shame. To top that off, the ZenBook Pro Duo also features an OLED touchscreen coupled with a DCI-P3 color gamut. The DCI-P3 color gamut is the latest standardization of color range commonly used in cinema production companies in the directorship of any upcoming silver screen wonders, which can also be found in most high-end gadgets and devices such as the likes of Apple. This further eludes to the fact that the ZenBook Pro Duo is more than capable of delivering otherworldly visuals and graphics when it comes to content creation or mere viewing pleasure alone.
Once the laptop cover is flipped open, users will instantly notice the secondary screen which is cleverly positioned just above the keyboard. This strategic positioning of the keyboard is purposed as such in order to work in great tandem with whatever presented on the main display. Aptly named as the ScreenPad Plus, this secondary screen not only responds to multitouch with haste, but also provides a layout of built-in customizations and options for users to explore. Ranging from the essential App Switcher to the handy dandy Task Swap, users can even put forth their penmanship into great use through the Handwriting feature, which allows them to jot down quick notes and record their thoughts should a creative muse strike them at any time of the day. The ScreenPad Plus also collaborates well with tasks from a variety of professions such as programmers, video editors, 3D animators, and also game streamers. Avid gamers are going to be in awe upon discovering that the ZenBook Pro Duo is also, undoubtedly, a powerhouse of gaming-grade components with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 discrete graphics amplified by the ray-tracing power of NVIDIA Turing architecture for the ultimate realism channeled forth from the gaming world.

The Asus ZenBook Pro Duo UX581GV is a laptop that is designed to give the ultimate edge in workflow efficiency. The unique design features a full-width 4K ASUS ScreenPad Plus that works seamlessly with the main 4K UHD OLED display. The 4K UHD NanoEdge OLED HDR display on the ZenBook Pro Duo is truly amazing, with a four-sided frameless design featuring ultra slim bezels. The brilliant OLED touchscreen delivers ultra vivid colors and deep blacks, with a cinema-grade 100% DCI-P3 color gamut making it a superb all-rounder for professional work and entertainment. With the ZenBook Pro Duo and the bundled stylus or other active stylus, users can really let their creativity flow. Both multitouch displays support stylus input, but the ScreenPad Plus gives a superbly ergonomic and stable platform for writing or drawing. Users can take notes, sketch out ideas, or do precision graphical editing in the most intuitive way ever. There’s also a separate palm rest in the box, which enhances the ErgoLift tilting keyboard design to give the most comfortable typing experience ever. The ScreenPad Plus gives effortless app multitasking, so ASUS works closely with third-party developers, including professional video-editing software developer Corel, to optimize the ScreenPad Plus for the ultimate productivity.
As for design, the brand new Celestial Blue color draws its inspiration from the future and gives the ZenBook Pro Duo a sophisticated air of timeless innovation. As befits such a revolutionary concept, it’s also decorated with a unique asymmetric version of the iconic Zen-inspired spun-metal finish. It is an intriguing design detail that gives the ZenBook Pro Duo a totally unmistakable identity. The sides are finished with wide, mirror-finished, diamond-cut edges, which reflect surroundings to add a subtle touch of ambient style. The ZenBook Pro Duo is powered by up to a 9th generation Intel Core i9 eight-core processor, the latest gaming-grade NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics and blisteringly fast storage. This ultra powerful combination ensures that ZenBook Pro Duo takes professional-quality tasks in its stride, such as multi-layer photo or video editing, 3D graphics rendering or even game live-streaming. Additionally, the latest gaming-grade NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 discrete graphics is powered by the NVIDIA Turing architecture. With this game-changing GPU, users can enjoy the power of ray-tracing for the ultimate visual realism. Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) also helps boost performance significantly. Besides that, with the processor’s unprecedented 5 GHz Turbo Boost frequency, the ZenBook Pro Duo can effortlessly handle all the apps on the main screen and the ScreenPad Plus. As a conclusion, the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo UX581GV is a powerful laptop that has a very new feature, which is the ScreenPad Plus. It might not be an affordable device to own, but it is a great device for creative users who often need to work with a stylus, or users who are generally interested to try out the new feature.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
