Asus ZenBook 15 UX533FD

The Asus ZenBook 15 UX533FD is one of the slightly more affordable offerings which still has decent performance. ASUS has updated its original ZenBook line with not only Intel's new Whiskey Lake U-series processors but also a new four-sided, nearly frameless design with up to 95 percent screen-to-body ratio. The whole ZenBook range is pretty stylish. The first thing to note is the commitment to keeping a high screen-to-body ratio of 92%, which is achieved by the side 3 mm bezels. Asus calls this ‘NanoEdge’, but that’s just really a fancy way of saying ‘a very thin bezel’. Then there are the colors which are beautiful deep blue and silver colored cases complimented nicely by rose gold accents. Weighing 1.59 kg, the ZenBook 15 isn’t as light as some of the other skinny laptops seen around. Then there’s something called ‘ErgoLift’, which is not as throwaway a name as it might sound once they realize what it means. The hinges of the ZenBook are shaped in such a way that when users open one, it has the effect of lifting the laptop’s posterior up off of the surface of the desk by an angle of 3 degrees. This sees the keys angled towards their hands at a more gentle angle, which supposedly makes it nicer to type on. As for hardware, it features a Core i7-8565U CPU, 8GB RAM, up to 512GB SSD and Harman Kardon-certified stereo speakers. Each laptop also has a traditional USB 3.1 port, two USB-A ports, a headphone jack, and a full-size HDMI port. These machines have passed various military-grade torture tests (MIL-STD-810G) so they should age a little better than many other laptops. Similarly, the ZenBook 15 has a 4K display option, DisplayPort output via USB-C, a full-size SD card slot instead of microSD, plus a larger 73W battery (up to 16 hours) instead of the 14-hour battery life of the smaller models such as the ZenBook 13 and 14. Asus claims this feature also ensures that any audio emitted by the downward-pointing Harmon Kardon-certified speakers won’t be immediately absorbed by the desktop. Another highlight of this series is the optional backlit "NumberPad" on the glass trackpad. Simply tap the top right button to toggle this virtual numeric keypad. And yes, a user can still swipe the cursor around in this mode, so a user doesn't have to keep turning the NumberPad off and on. While this is obviously a poor man's ScreenPad from the ZenBook Pro, Asus still put in some effort into this component's five-layer construction, in order to make the NumberPad invisible while disabled. As a conclusion, the ZenBook 15 is an elegant laptop which features a big display. It is designed to give a user the freedom to discover the creative power, such as photo editing and multimedia related tasks. Thus, this laptop is designed for professionals on the go. Asus Zenbook 15 UX533F Review – Beauty with Brains!
Source: Tech PP English Archive.org version
Yes, it is pricey and there are more powerful alternatives to the Zenbook 15 at that price, and of course, there are other laptops from competitors like the Dell XPS series that offer good performance along with a portable form factor, but it all boils down to personal preference and the fact that you’re getting a larger display in the footprint of a smaller laptop, and performance that you won’t complain about.

In the end, the Asus ZenBook 15 UX533FD is a solid allrounder and earns our recommendation. The form-factor, the overall performance, and long battery life are its main selling points, but it has its fair share of quirks, as well as quite a few merely “good enough” aspects, judging by today’s expectations.

That said, there are plenty of compelling reasons to pick this Asus ZenBook 15 (UX533F) right now. Gaming is the cherry on top of a versatile package. And while this isn’t a certified gaming machine capable of blasting through modern AAA titles, it will happily handle older, less demanding games. If you plan on gaming on your laptop more than working, though, you might want to check out the current crop of the best gaming laptops here instead.

The ZenBook 15 UX533F has a lot working in its favour. A beautiful design, portability, gorgeous display, fast processor, and good battery life are all the prerequisites of a capable laptop in the premium segment. The ZenBook 15 UX533F offers all that, and except for the somewhat sub-par audio experience, an annoyingly reflective display, and the flex, there is nothing much to dislike.

Asus ZenBook 15 (UX533FD) first look
Source: Trusted Reviews English Archive.org version
The Asus ZenBook 15 is very nice-looking indeed and though hands-on time was limited to the point where I couldn’t do much more than browse the web and watch some YouTube clips, I’ve already seen some of what a Whiskey Lake-powered laptop can do in terms of fast file transfer over gigabit Wi-Fi. The claim of 16 hours battery life is also impressive, one which we can’t wait to put to the test. As much as I suspected that the ErgoLift hinge was just a bit of fancy branding, I have to admit that the ZenBook is very nice to type on and that might in part have something to do with the angle of the board. While colour isn’t important, it is also great to see attention to detail here, something that isn’t the same old black/grey/white variations.

Thanks to Intel’s Core i7-8565U and Nvidia’s GTX 1050 Max-Q, the Asus ZenBook 15 packs a lot of performance in a very slim chassis. With a fast SSD and 16 GB of RAM, the Asus notebook does not leave anything to be desired. Read our review to find out if this is truly so.
ASUS ZenBook 15 UX533 review – brings you something unseen from a ULV laptop
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
Screen-wise, ZenBook 15 UX533 is equipped with a good 1080p panel (BOE NV156FHM-N63 (BOE07D8)), with punchy but rather accurate colors (especially with our Gaming and Web design profile), good contrast ratio, 92% of sRGB coverage and no flickering, whatsoever. Add the near 14-hour web browsing battery life and you end up with a pretty strong contender. Definitely, one of the great devices you can get for this amount of money. However, let us remind you of the 15-inch convertible HP Spectre x360 15 (15-df0000), which offers similar performance, even better battery life and a 4K touchscreen monitor at about the same price. However, it is both thicker and substantially heavier than the ASUS ZenBook 15 UX533.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q: Efficient mid-range graphics card for thin and light laptops based on the same GP107 chip as the normal GTX 1050 for laptops but at slower clock speeds. Offers a approx. 10 - 15% lower performance than the laptop GTX 1050 but at a much lower power consumption.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q: More power efficient version of the GTX 1050 Ti with about 10-15% slower than a normal laptop GTX 1050 Ti.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile: Mainstream graphics card based on Nvidia's Pascal architecture and successor to the GeForce GTX 960M. Is manufactured in a 14nm process at Samsung and the technical specifications are very similar to the desktop version.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

i7-8565U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.

87.23%: This is an above-average rating. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that about one fifth of all tested models receive a better rating.
