The Zephyrus G14 is a compact gaming device that was unrivaled for a long time. In order to distance itself from the competition, Asus takes a different approach with the Zephyrus G14 by presenting the device as an "Alan Walker Special Edition" with nice design features that make the device visually eye-catching.

Give it up for the new Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Alan Walker Special Edition. It’s a new version of the second iteration of what was already a great laptop. The original Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 was something of a genre buster when it arrived last year with its compact 14-inch proportions, awesome AMD CPU and great gaming performance. This new second generation Special Edition model carries over that basic proposition, but adds an unusual twist, namely collaboration with the eponymous DJ and musician Alan Walker. As we type these words, Walker currently has the 19th most popular video on Youtube with no fewer than 3.2 billions views, not to mention over 10 billion channel views. Not bad. Anyway, Walker has collaborated with Asus to produce a new version of the G14 that fuses music with gaming. The basic design of the G14 is carried over, complete with the funky Anime Matrix programmable LED feature on the rear of the display. But various tweaks including a change to metallic grey, fabric inserts and new colours for the keyboard make for a distinct new look.

There is no doubt that the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Alan Walker Edition is an impressive laptop on many fronts. Asus has taken care of all the major aspects of the laptop, including a great, portable form factor, powerful performance enablers and stunning design and theme. You will still find bits and pieces missing here and there. For instance, the device does not come with a webcam, definitely a big drawback in today's world. Even with the powerful specs, there is a chance that you will be left wanting more at some point, more so if you have seen other laptops perform better at a lower price. So, if your focus is on budget, you can probably look at other machines for your use, including the standard Zephyrus G14 without the Alan Walker branding. But if you want to stand out in the crowd with a portable laptop that serves you well for most purposes, Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Alan Walker Edition is the laptop for you.

The laptop even features a custom boot animation and Alan Walker wallpaper. The glass touchpad is shaded with a customized pattern inspired by a music equalizer, alongside keycaps matching Alan Walker’s signature colors—plus A and W keys with the producer’s logo printed on top. To cap it all off, an Alan Walker and ROG-styled baseball cap and pair of socks also come bundled with a special edition of the ROG Sleeve so owners can represent the Republic anywhere.

The price to feature ratio or let’s say performance to price ratio is well maintained here. However, it’s a special edition and Asus has completely justified it with the design and by offering a bunch of other addons like customised boot-up animation and sound, Alan Walker AniMe Matrix graphics. But, there should have been more significant changes in terms of hardware than just aesthetics. The laptop does just fine in every aspect and it brings much more to the table over the regular version. The Zephyrus G14 Alan Walker Edition is worth a buy if you are a music lover especially an Alan Walker fan. Otherwise, the regular Zephyrus G14 will serve the purpose.

With all the other competent 14-inch performance laptops available these days, the ROG Zephyrus G14 stands somewhere in the middle of the pack, as the potentially best-balanced laptop in its class, and I feel that applies to both the 3050Ti and the 3060 configurations. What's you're getting here is excellent build quality and inputs, good features and ergonomics, as well as solid performance for this size class, but also high internal temperatures and a design that inconveniently blows the hot air into the screen, something I just don't like about Asus's entire 2021 range of Zephyrus G laptops.

Priced at RM7699, the ROG Zephyrus G14 2021 is priced the same as its predecessor, yet offers an upgraded CPU, GPU, display, storage and also a faster 100W USB-PD charger in the box. And it is still going to be one of the most portable gaming laptops you can buy, with it being one of very few gaming laptops with a 14″ display, while also tipping the scales at just 1.7kg. And did I mention just how cool the Anime Matrix is? Overall, the ROG Zephyrus G14 2021 is still the gaming laptop I will pick for myself in a heartbeat. There are things that I do wish that ASUS had done to make it more relevant for 2021, like adding a webcam in that upper bezel, or maybe going with a larger 3:2 or 16:10 display to fill up that bottom bezel. An SD card reader would also have been perfect to flesh out the content creator-oriented side of this laptop. Aside from that, I really don’t know what else could ASUS have improved with the ROG Zephyrus G14 2021.

When the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 first launched last year, we praised it for combining a 14-inch display (then, rare among gaming laptops) with Nvidia GeForce RTX 20-Series power and AMD Ryzen processing at a sweet price. The updated 2021 G14 (starts at $1,549.99) uses the same design, but pumps things up to RTX 30-Series and newer Ryzen 5000 chips. Our $1,999 test unit also includes a 1440p display and 32GB of memory, so the boosted price of our model isn’t as strong of a value as the original G14, but the entry-point configuration (which still features an RTX 3060) is an attractive proposition. Also, the market for 14-inch gaming laptops has expanded: Competing 14-inchers are now popping up from most of the usual suspects (the Razer Blade 14 is our top pick), making the G14 less of a unicorn. But this new model is still a great package.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 is a near-perfect laptop in almost all aspects, whether you have professional needs or gaming. Heavy-duty internals wrapped in a package that is light enough to fit snugly in your backpack is a rarity, and ASUS seems to have mastered the art. A point of concern is the absence of Thunderbolt 4 ports that Intel-powered devices have readily available. The lack of a webcam also means that you would need to purchase an additional accessory if you are to conduct video calls. Lastly, there does appear to be some kind of heating issue on the device but that hasn’t affected my gaming experience. The Zephyrus G14 is my top recommendation for users that like to dabble in games but also want to carry the same machine to their office or college.

So, is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401 worth it? Well, for the price you’ll get one of the most powerful room heaters 14″ laptops on the market. Jokes aside, if the user can get past the mentioned downsides, like the hot chassis, not having a webcam or the lack of a LAN port, then the Zephyrus G14 offers excellent performance for 1080p gaming without sacrificing portability.
