If you only have about $1300 to spend on a powerful multimedia/gaming computer with modern specs and features, the Asus G551JM should be towards the top of your list. This laptop isn't perfect, but its strong points clearly outweighs its numerous, but less important, flaws. The G551 is not without rivals though and those include the Asus N551 and Zenbook GX500 models, the Lenovo Y50 or the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro. And then you get the bigger 17 inch machines, like the Asus G771 (a larger version of the unit tested here, which I reviewed a while ago) or the G751 series, but also the much sleeker gaming ultrabooks, including the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro, for instance. Make sure to check them out before deciding what’s best for you.

The G551 is part of Asus' gamer-dedicated ROG series. The Asus ROG G551JM is for gamers who prioritise all-round performance over raw power. It can run a lot of games with a good level of graphic details and at a decent frame rate. It is easily transportable for day-to-day use.

The entire package is priced at Rs 82,999. While there are better graphics solutions available, the price point goes up accordingly. But in the price you are also getting accessories which you would have had to spend money on, so it is not such a bad deal. Considering the Alienware 17 and ASUS G750JX cost over a lakh – considering their flagship specifications, the Asus G551JK looks like it is reasonably priced for someone who wants a full HD gaming laptop but not the extreme top-of-the-line features. If you want to save even more money, then you can check out the Dell 7000 series laptop or the Lenovo Y50.

Asus G551JW-CN080H
Silent cooling and high-performance are two words that usually do not got well together in the computer industry, but the Asus G551JW-CN080H does just that. The laptop comes with an aluminium chassis that is both discreet and modern. With subtle corner curves and a beautiful hinge mechanism, the Asus G551JW-CN080H has just the elements to remain classy without the sometimes over exaggerated aggressive look found on some gaming laptops. Details are kept simple with the red stripping all around the interior and even the front cover is finished in simple brush metal texture. The Windows 8.1 system comes with impressive internal works to supplement the quality appearance. At the heart of the laptop there are an Intel Core i7-4720HQ quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz, up to 16 GB of DDR3L RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M GPU with either 2 GB or 4 GB VRAM and a stunningly beautiful 15.6 inch display. Storage options are plenty with 2 TB HDD, 750 GB hybrid drives to 128 GB SSD combinations. Other features included are the option to have an optical drive installed, a card reader, an HD webcam, three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI out and a mini Display Port. Audio quality is good with the built-in speakers and the Asus G551JW-CN080H comes with a 6-cell battery rated at 5200 mAh.Specifications

On the other hand, ASUS ROG G551 offers better and more durable design, and has a very good choice of display (when compared to the Inspiron which has poor sRGB coverage). We can’t but mention the lack of PWM across all brightness levels – agreat advantage important for our health. All these characteristic features can help you decide which one is for you, and we shall continue with our battles between the most interesting and affordable gaming laptops.

Overall the choices that have been made are sensible and the resulting laptop is a reasonable 30mm thick unit that weighs an acceptable 2.7kg and delivers plenty of gaming performance. Pricing is slightly on the steep side and would have felt more comfortable at £999, but the fact is that Asus charges a premium for ROG products and the market appears to be willing to pay a little extra. At the time of going to press, this model was £1,099.

The design is also nice if you are willing to clean your notebook more often due to the fingerprint magnet surface on the lid and interior. Nonetheless, the keyboard additionally provides the much-desired comfort along with the responsive touchpad. The price of the machine could also be considered as an advantage as it has the same hardware as some of its competitors, but keeping way better temperatures than the Y50 and Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition. So if you are considering either the G501 or the G551, the G551 will be much more reliable while the G501 will provide better mobility due to its lightweight and thin profile.

The Asus G551V walks a very fine line between the two. It’s built like the Dell and priced like the G501VW. It’s performance is not as erratic as the G501VW and better than the Inspiron. All things considered, I think the Asus G551V is the better deal here. If you really are looking for a laptop in the Rs 1,00,000 range, look no further than the Asus ROG G551VW. Just ensure that you’ve uninstalled all Asus bloat before using it though.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4710HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.5 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
78.44%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
